Why do they think that it will take up to two years?

Most of that time will most likely be for the defit of the building (asbestos removal, disconnection of building services, removal of plumbing, .etc). North Wing is also a pretty huge building and has many basement floors as well that are much larger than the above ground footprint of the building (I think about 3 floors not including utility corridors). They also have to relocate the substation underneath, which would probably add several months to the process.

The title of National would be good but what matters more is what the gallery will contain. Hopefully unique artworks. We also want an iconic building. Perhaps with Aboriginal influence in its design.

Cheers

I'm not sure what the issue is with using 'national' in the title is, even if the Northern Territory establish the same or similar. Prior to the National Gallery opening in Canberra, each of the state art galleries in Australia were called 'National Gallery of ...', after the gallery opened in Victoria, they all changed their names (Victoria was the only state that didn't). Whilst a name doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot, from a tourism perspective, if we're the bigger city with a National Aboriginal Gallery and house the largest collection of Aboriginal art/artefacts, then that counts for something both nationally and globally. And until Canberra open similar, then we should nab that title!

Perhaps it shouldn't be called something so prosaic anyway. Maybe instead something like First Nations Gallery (or Museum, Institute, Centre, etc) of Living Culture. Then again, I'm not sure if this new body and Tandanya have unique enough purposes to operate separately, so if it's owners were agreeable, perhaps they could gift its name (which appropriately acknowledges Kaurna country and the parklands location). Ultimately though, whatever it's called should be decided by the peoples it's claiming to represent, not a bunch of non-Indigenous folk on the Internet, the press or in government.

It's clearly a visual device for media releases only (and several years old at that). The Liberals are still at the very beginning of this project. In addition to not yet knowing what it will look like (presuming the design comp was abandoned), we have also no idea what it will be called, how much it will cost or when it will be built.

I'm sure it's just a promo render, but I'll agree with the sentiments of others if that's revealed to be accurate. Straight out of 1960s Brasilia.

It also has the smell of vastly scaling back the space originally dedicated to the modern art gallery so that they can use it to build that hotel of theirs instead.

I still don't understand why those plane trees that fronted North Terrace had to go. Was it bothering them during demolition? I hope they've planted new ones somewhere else to make up. Also thinking that this will be a dust bowl this summer. Let's hope we don't get strong hot northerly winds that will cloud the CBD in dust. :2cents:

Cheers

P.S. BTW thanks for all the pics EBG.
