MOTORISTS can drive over the Bakewell Underpass project from today.
The first stage of the $41 million dollar project has been completed and the road bridge over the underpass will be open to traffic and pedestrians from 10am. One lane will be open in each direction for vehicles and pedestrians to cross the section of the James Congdon Drive-East Tce bridge.
Pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Henley Beach Rd and East Tce will be moved to allow for the opening of the bridge. Temporary pedestrian signals will be installed on James Congdon Drive near Hughes St, which will operate between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
The changes to traffic and pedestrian conditions will continue until the underpass is opened towards the end of the year. The final road bridge will allow two lanes of traffic in each direction, on-road bike lanes and a shared pedestrian and off-road bicycle path.
A limit of 40km/h on James Congdon Drive and East Tce near the construction site will continue.

[COM] Re: Bakewell Underpass Project - Updates
Southbound traffic has been prevented from travelling over the new bridge from 3am this morning (Sat 14th).
I called in three times today, twice during the day and finally at 11pm. Each time there was nothing happening but the traffic was still being diverted.
Earlier in the day I was told that the remaining bridge support was coming down. The traffic diversion is in place until Monday morning so the demolition must be some time on Sunday.

According to locals, work began on the demolition of the remaining Bakewell bridge pier at 9:30am Sunday.
There has been much speculation over the last few months as to what process would be used. In the end, a machine with what can best be described as a mega pair of snips is simply cutting it up!

I took a train to and from Belair today and made note of the work going on. The Adelaide end approach to the underpass is looking much closer to completion for a start. The tarmac from what is left at the West Terrace end of Glover Avenue can now be seen from the train.
That final pyle was looking like it was giving a fair fight since when compared to Bill's photos and when I was through there at about 5pm, not much had changed. Some more work on the corners had been done but not a lot else.

I wonder if those snips have a "WARNING: Keep fingers clear!" label on them?

This photo was taken on the Wendnesday following last weekend's efforts and the big jack-hammer is dealing with the remaining foundations. I drove past on Saturday and couldn't see anything left.
I guess that the material in the foreground is reinforcing rod.
