[PRO] Westfield Marion

No UK has really resisted the shopping centre movement for as long as they can, and in some ways I think that's probably a good thing.

I wouldn't say the food court at Meadowhall was tiny by any means, it's certainly at least twice the size of Marion food court. Maybe it's been upgraded since you lived there, or maybe you just forgot how big it is?
Also the food court at the Traffod centre is even bigger than meadowhalls (and a million times nicer).
Yes we do have excellent facilities in terms of functionality and range of shops here, but it would be nice if they spent a bit more on quality shopping environments.

the question of demand is important in the uk but so is need. both can be artificially created by surveys etc for use in retail impact assessments, however, i certainly believe that large shopping devs can kill of high streets. that said, it is niche marketing where places like jetty road can find a future so i think your ideas plus boutique and festival shopping is the way to go
[PRO] First look at the new face of shopping
From The Messenger:
THIS is the first image of the proposed $200 million redevelopment of Westfield Marion, which will make the retail hub Australia's second-biggest shopping centre.
Viewed from Diagonal Rd, with the existing centre tower visible, the artwork shows the centre's facade has been moved forward to include new shops and cafes.
It also depicts a balcony on the second level, which caters for diners or shoppers, while also allowing for car parking underneath.
Although it is not visible in this sketch, a three-level car park and landscaping also is planned for the Diagonal Rd side of the shopping hub.
The redevelopment, which is planned to start in 2009 and be finished by 2010, means Westfield Marion will be second only to Melbourne's Chadstone shopping centre in size in Australia.
An extra 90 shops will be added to Marion's existing 270 businesses, along with an additional 900 car parks for a total of 6449 spaces.
The Guardian Messenger broke the news of the plans in April.
Westfield spokeswoman Julia Clarke could not be contacted before press time but said when the upgrade was announced the centre was due for an overhaul. ``It's typical for shopping centres to be redeveloped every five to seven years, and Marion was last redeveloped in 1997, so the centre is ready for an upgrade,'' she said.
T
he redevelopment must be approved by Marion Council before work can start.

Sorry to sound so cynical, but I work at Westfield West Lakes and I have not seen any nice street frontage. Have I missed something?

The new part facing east towards football park looks good IMO.pushbutton wrote:Sorry to sound so cynical, but I work at Westfield West Lakes and I have not seen any nice street frontage. Have I missed something?

The West Lakes upgrade isn't really street frontage, it's just several shops and restaurants that front onto the carpark on the AAMI Stadium side, whereas the Marion upgrade will have actual frontages to Diagonal Road.

Personally I think it's very ugly and disjointed. Still, I'm glad you like it!

IMO that is a very bad render, it shows nothing.
you cant see anything on that photo, i cant even see what they are trying to do??
Show a bit more with the extra carparks and that?

It would be nice if there was anything TO see!
Come on Westfield, cough up a bit of cash and invest in something decent at Marion. We deserve that after all the money we spend in your centres, and your tenants certainly deserve it after all the extortionate rents they have paid you!
