The tunnel under the parklands is a waste of money and should be redirected at other PT projects or spent elsewhere where it is needed immediately. I have never been a fan of the O-Bahn. The accident yesterday is one reason. If it was on rail they would've had signals and other safety measures...not to mention the log jam of buses. It should be converted to light rail. My rant may come too late and if they go ahead with the tunnel I hope it will be converted to accept trams in future. However I would've preferred the trams to run along North Terrace to join up with the line to the Entertainment Centre and Glenelg. A logical extension from the Northeast to the Southwest and running along our cultural boulevard. Anyway, politicians don't have vision or think logically. All they are interested in is throwing away money for a handful of votes!

Cheers

To be fair...
1. This has only been the third accident on the line since it opened.
2. There was no log jam, the other buses used the local road network to bypass the accident.
3. Work has already started on the project.

what about all the cars that find their way onto the tracks? those are accidents and end up bringing the city's only well used rapid transit line to a standstill, and they happen fairly regularly.

Once every few years isn't regular, the Gawler line shuts down from the heat more often then people driving onto the O-Bahn

What causes the shutdowns from heat, track, signalling, rolling stock, and how often? The concrete sleepered track should be far less prone to buckling than the old wooden sleepered track.

A closure of a section of the OBahn does not bring it to a standstill. Unlike the closure of a train line, the same vehicles route around the problem on street. Sure this results in delays, but what happens when a train line is closed? A fleet of buses are deployed to replace the entire line.

Also, what about cars that find their way onto train tracks?

Your arguments are invalid. ;)

And to add it is highly likely the accident the other day was driver error. How fast was he driving for him to a) ram into another bus in the first place and b) ram into a bus at considerable speed.

And what would happen if a tyre or guide wheel were to disintegrate whilst going at 90km/h?

Well that's a big if, has that ever happened before? It would do a lot less damage then a train derailment at 90km that's for sure

Not much. The tyres are reinforced in case of a blowout.

The lack of trees alongside the track in the video goes to show just how wide the corridor is/was for the Modbury Freeway, perhaps the concept could still see the light of day?

But that video shows the old Mercedes, not the Scania CB60s or CB80s.
I wouldn't be surprised if Transfield (now "Broadspectrum") didn't bother putting reinforced tyres on the new buses.

Interesting point. I would think it would be a requirement, like the guide wheels, to put the metal wheels on. But I've never seen anything to confirm or deny this.

If or when the relevant authorities tell people what happened in the crash we can see wether this was actually a problem with the bus or driver error.
(I think it is driver error)

The DAC approved this project today.

Going through the papers, there is a concept for a yet-to-be-funded pedestrian bridge near St. Peters College. The concept plan can be seen on Page 14 here: http://www.dac.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/ ... LANS_1.pdf
