It begins
Designed to save seven minutes on commute times for O-Bahn users, it’s clearly not all roses.

The recently rubber-stamped $160 million city tunnel project broke ground Wednesday by removing the much-loved rose garden and vines from Hackney Rd and is set to cause 18 months of headaches for drivers and residents in north east of the city.

The project’s start follows a survey by The Advertiser in June of 307 commuters at the Paradise and Klemzig interchanges, which found 51.1 per cent did not think extending the O-Bahn under the parklands was cost effective.

Fifty-four per cent of commuters preferred the money be spent on building more parking at the Paradise and Klemzig interchanges.

Residents in the area said they were only advised last week of a major traffic change that bans all right turns at the Botanic Rd/Hackney Rd/Dequetteville Tce/North Tce intersection until the tunnel works were completed which will be in place for the length of the project.

...
■ Effective Sunday, April 10, all right turns at the Botanic Rd/Hackney Rd/Dequetteville Tce/North Tce will be banned.

■ A new pedestrian/cycling bridge structure constructed adjacent to the existing western Hackney Road Bridge will mean the Linear Park path will be closed until late this year.

■ Turns into and out of Hackney Rd will be restricted throughout construction, with the exception of right turns from Hackney Rd (northbound) into Wyandra Lane, and right turns

from Hackney Road (southbound) into Plane Tree Drive.

■ Following its completion the ‘left hand turn with care option’ will be removed from

– Dequetteville Tc onto Rundle Rd,

– Rundle Rd onto Dequetteville Tce,

– North Tc (Botanic Rd) onto East Tce

– Rundle Rd onto East Tce.

– East Tce onto Bartels Rd.

■ Upon completion Rundle Rd will be reduced to single lane traffic.

To be fair, the Advertiser said "removing much loved rose garden" I don't think this is actually happening. What is happening is the removal of the bramble/roses in the median strip?
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Adelaide Metro have put up on their website details of revised-temporarily timetables for all O-Bahn routes for the next 6 weeks. As well a temporary timetable for 645/646 routes and a 12 month temporary timetable for 281 Route, all because of work on hackney Road for the new O-Bahn tunnel and bus lanes.

Trying to ruffle the feathers of senior citizens and the parkland association I reckon. Median strip garden is all it is, Im sure this strips horde of lovers can find a median strip to love.

Excavations in the middle of Hackney Rd have begun as of now.
But never fear, it'll be Business As Usual for WOMADelaide, Fringe Festival, etc. next year.

Parklands trees felled to make way for O-Bahn

Dozens of trees, including significant and regulated trees, have been felled this morning to make way for the O-Bahn tunnel, leaving parklands campaigners devastated.

Four significant trees, 10 regulated trees and 63 “amenity” trees are among those to be cut down in Rymill Park and Rundle Park today.

Save Rymill Park campaign spokesperson Shane Sody told InDaily that the “jewel of the parklands” would have its peaceful atmosphere “shattered” by the O-Bahn development, and Adelaide residents will be devastated by the loss of trees and amenity.

Reply from SA Planning, Transport & Infrastructure's Facebook:
The construction schedule for the O-Bahn City Access Project has been carefully designed to ensure major events including WOMADelaide, Fringe and associated events such as the Garden of Unearthly Delights and Gluttony will go ahead as planned in 2017. There may be some minor changes to site layouts however DPTI will continue to work with the organisers of these events, Adelaide City Council and other relevant stakeholders.

probably, but it does secure a corridor through the parklands that can be upgraded later

Without derailing this topic (no pun intended   ), is it likely that the eventual Eastern suburbs tram will share the O-Bahn corridor?

I know that the tram travelled through Rymil Park in the 1950s and that the original O-Bahn plan which involved the new roadway and closing Rundle Rd had provisions for a future tram. Do those provisions still remain in this iteration of the O-Bahn plan? How would a potential O-Bahn/Tram potentially work?

The plan is to turn the Rundle Road car park into a tramway. Whether or not the car parks will stay is another matter.

I asked a whiles back if the tunnel could accommodate either trams or double decker buses to allow for future flexibility. The plans I think are unclear as to if this is the case. As shuz pointed out the clearances under the overpasses under the rest of the obahn would not allow for either of these options.
