Yeh it makes sense, and its the reason why the street name changes once it crosses over King william intersections.

Lots of my friends have also had this discussion, and are like 'WOW! thats so cool! hehe'

It might be confusing for the casual tourist, but locals understand and know the streets. I am totally against a change, and don't support it.

What considerable grounds could you decide to change the street names? Tourists will have a map to help them out. This is just completely a waste of time changing street signage, and for businesses and buildings as well. How about we just continue improving streetscape of our main streets, lighting and so on. The names are perfect.

Cheers all - I can say it will not happen - we have too many important things to focus on than this...

Traveling is not much fun anymore for me. Just a looong commute really, and yep - you are right, it's like comparing apples to oranges - both cities are sweet but have different tastes :-)

Shanghai is a massive sprawling metropolis with many stunning skyscrapers, and at the street level there are millions of people roaming around - almost 24/7. The traffic is a nightmare from 7am-9pm everyday, and bizarrely the subway metro shuts at 10:30pm which creates another rush hour late every evening!?! Quite frankly i find Shanghai to be an overly intense experience -a few days is more than enough for me!

Interestingly, although Shanghai has many skyscrapers, they don't really contribute to its "unique skyline". Instead there is a row of 7-15 storey beautiful old european buildings along the riverfront (called "The Bund") and it's these buildings that tourists remember when they recall their travels to Shanghai. Here's a pikkie:

The other difference is that you can clearly see to the horizon in Adelaide. Sometimes in Shanghai it's difficult to see across town. The pollution is horrific - you can taste the air on a bad day. I can't wait to get home again.

Sorry for being off topic here guys...

Fantastic!I'm with you councilor. All this means heaps of extra unnecessary costs to all businesses advertising from these streets, letterhead changes, council costs to change the actual signage etc etc.

I must add that the rather quaint idea of not crossing King William (the monarch) is the best I've heard for streets that constantly change names. It all gets too confusing if perpetuated adnauseum in CBD's.

Whose stupid idea was it in the first place to even suggest changing street names?

Oh, typical. Only Fitzy in the whole of Adelaide could have trouble remembering the main street names - that guy is an absolute dumb shit - excuse my language, but even thats understating what he really is. Why do the people of Adelaide continue to glorify him?

It's not that freaking hard...

North Terrace
Hindley > Rundle
Currie > Grenfell
Waymouth > Pirie
Franklin > Flinders
Grote > Wakefield
Gouger > Angus
Halifax, Carrington, Sturt... and some others in between there... they're not really important streetsat the moment so who needs to remeber those? :P
South Terrace.
As for east >< west - West Terrace, Morphett, King William, Pulteney, Frome, Hutt, East Terrace.
Not to mention people should know basics like Gawler Place, the 5 squares - Victoria, Hurtle, Hindmarsh, Light and Whitmore. Wellington is the one in North Adelaide, the tram stops in the city, and notable landmarks like Art Gallery, Town Hall, GPO, Chinatown, Central Markets, Westpac House, UniSA and Adelaide Uni. Its all simple geography really, at least thats what I would expect of those who know me.

Not naming and shaming, but I've come across someone who didn't know where Victoria Square is.

Fitzy seems like an alright bloke to me. Seen him out and about a few times, looks like a pretty down to earth guy.

Good lord could you imagine if he was Lord Mayor of the city, the place would fast turn into a extension of Noarlunga or wherever he comes from. I used to be a fan of a Fitzy, but after watching him on Friday Night Live and listening to him on Nova 919 I think hes a bit of a idiot.

Its very dumb of him (but not surprisingly in a way) to suggest we should change all the city street names, it would just be a nightmare for hundreds of businesses and residents in the city who would have to change their address on everything. Then even more confusing for locals and tourists.

Its bad enough that the Adelaide City Council has changed the names of Victoria Square, Victoria Park and some of the other parks because of there so called aboriginal history. All it has done is made the names cringe-worthy and confusing to tourists aswell as locals.

I would support perhaps changing the name of a few of the streets.

Some of the streets are named after irrelevant people. And although we all love tradition, I think their would be some merit in changing the crappy street names to ones that are reflective on our States history as well as our Nations history.

Names such as Monash, Barton, Hughes, those blokes who invented penecillen, Dunstan or maybe even a South Australian sports star.

As I said, I love history but some of the names are irrevelant, and we do need to change (remember we want to stop backward thinking).
