Give that man a cheeroot!omada wrote:I think the wetlands are an excellent idea, if done properly. Have boardwalk style trails, good informative signage etc, it will be like an oasis in the city, will bring bird life into the area and provide an insight into life on the Adelaide Plains pre -European conquest, all minutes from the cbd!
Look at what has been done with the mangrove flats at St Kilda - if walkways can turn mangrove swamps into a tourist destination, I'm sure they can work at Pinky Flat.
cheers,

Also they may help with detoxifying the Torrens Lake of its annual algae problem. More ecosystem = more healthy.rhino wrote:Give that man a cheeroot!omada wrote:I think the wetlands are an excellent idea, if done properly. At least this plan to bring people to the river gives them priority over vehicles; one narrow bridge servicing North Tce. from Parliament House to the Hyatt is a joke. Hajek's sculpture - which was never finished with planned foliage - should be relocated to a sculpture park named in my honour on Government House grounds.

Wetlands and boardwalks are fine at St Kilda but I doubt that signposted swamp eco-tours will draw the crowds - can you imagine that scenario at Southbank or Circular Quay? But probably good for mozzie breeding or as condom collectors. I'm not anti-wilderness but if I wanted it outside my door I wouldn't choose to live in a city. Look to Brisbane if you want an example of how a river can co-exist with an urban environment. There's plenty of mudflats and mangroves up there but they are not so daft that they put them in the middle of the city.

just hope its not too late as it looks like the wetlands are set in concrete, cheap alterantive but wont draw people to stay there all night and watch where as these things will, even if you do as melbourne do every hour have spectacluar show on the hour with those flame throwers, come on guys you have connections , unfort im just a small guy that loves to see adelaide progress, let the people who are in the know that we need something like this, maybe if we push this agenda someone might listen,i hope

i'm really curious to know why you have so much against wetlands or nature, you think Las Vegas style Casino's and fountains will be a better option? This is Adelaide people! Tourists come here for different reasons, and anyway I think the wetlands are there for the benefit of residents human and non human.
[COM] Re: Adelaide Convention Centre, Casino & Riverbank Developme
I'm not against wetlands or nature - but everything has a place.
and a wetlands style feature in the middle of the CBD is not right.
sure, people won't come to Adelaide specifically for the light show business, but it will add significantly more to the atosphere that if it wasn't.
a wetlands type attraction are suited to the burbs where there is more room and better access....

I like the idea of the wetlands however the proposed location is incorrect.
A better location would be the western basin of the Torrens lake (i.e. between Morphett St. and the old gaol). That part of the Torrens already has that 'wilderness' look and the wetlands proposal would really suit it.
I think it would be nice to create a Torrens of 'contrasts'; for example, the section between KWS and Morphett St. should have 'Las Vegas' type water features and then the western basin of the Torrens lake should have the wetlands and other nature-based attractions.

That's the problem, not many tourists come here at all, excluding for events or travelling to regional areas. If we want this Riverbank development to be a success, then it needs to be exciting and amazing. Spectacular day/night water features are a really good idea, it would bring colour, excitement and be another tourist drawcard for the precinct and Adelaide itself. All other Australian cities (excluding Canberra) can't really pull this off due to commercial traffic using their rivers, so this is our chance to have something unique over the other cities.omada wrote:i'm really curious to know why you have so much against wetlands or nature, you think Las Vegas style Casino's and fountains will be a better option? The wetlands proposal does have some merit, but the proposed location is just simply wrong and it would be a daytime only attraction. There are so many other better locations for this type of development, like near the old gaol or even somewhere in the underused parklands. Isn't there already a wetlands underway in the Botanic Gardens anyway?, a much better location IMO.
Pinky Flat is already a beautifully landscaped park with stunning city views that is used for some community events. All it needs is some cafes and bars along the river edge to capture those views and it would be perfect, also maybe an attraction for the kids or something..
