I agree entirely. It's not a deal breaker, but it is a missed opportunity to create something that would feel unique in Adelaide.
Quite five minute paint job to show the type of thing I would have liked, the entire wall would be extended up and retained as a facade, with a 4-5 meter wide void behind it before the interior floor levels start.

Head off for demolition pics too, Xaragma!
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

I took a photo of the Grenfell st side of the building this afternoon but unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me so I took it on my phone and for some reason I'm having difficulty getting it from my phone onto my camera.
However just to let you know what's happening, scaffolding is being erected all along the Grenfell st facade now. So far it's about a third of the way along, or was when I left the city about 3pm. The scaffolding is being covered with a hard green plastic covering for dust protection and shade which will make it hard to see much of what's happening that side of the building once heavy duty external demolition commences.
In the laneway where the large plant equipment was removed yesterday there are two large gaps in the wall and you can see into the rooms the equipment was located in. Presumably there were no doors there and the front of the actual equipment formed part of the wall, I think.
Lots of very thick cables have been cut at the base of the equipment and this can be seen by the cut cables in the floor of those rooms I mentioned. I assume it was either air-conditioning plant of electrical generators of something similar.
On the Rundle Mall side if you look into the windows on the top floor you can see pieces of timber and other debris leaning against the inside of the windows, indicating that probably quite a bit of internal stripout has already been done on the upper levels.

No one may know, but what is going to happen to all the "nicer / more interesting" things that are being stripped out? Like the safe and things in that Advertiser article about a month ago?
Also, does anyone have any photos of the old elevator that used to be controlled by a staff member? I remembered yesterday that years ago I went there and was amazed that they still had a manual lift. Good times

Actually, that wasn't that long ago. I've been working in the City for a little less than 6 years, and that manual lift was in operation when my work moved here.
cheers,

Went again today but again sorry no camera this time. However just to let everyone know what's happening the roof trusses have all been removed on the section of Grenfell st fronting roof furthest from the carpark. Also the first part of the gantry along the alleyway on that side of the building has been constructed (from Da Costa arcade to Rundle Mall). This was obviously done at night so as to not interupt access to the arcade and presumably more will be constructed tonight and probably the next 2 or 3 nights till it's complete. It's a VERY solid looking gantry as you might expect, with steel supports that are as thick as standard construction beams.

It would be nice if someone could set up a webcam on the site for the duration of the demolition and new construction work, ideally one pointing at the Grenfell st side and one at the Rundle Mall side. That way we wouldn't have to rely on visits to the city to take photos.

I would kill for pictures of the old lifts. I am trying to get Harris Scarfes to re-instate a lift operator in their new building with the argument that it keeps some charm within the new building from the stores history. Also, they pay some person to stand out the front of their smaller stores to direct people, why not have someone do that in the lift in the city and continue the tradition?

I think there's probably one or two other ladies fashion shops in Rundle Mall!
Is Susan part of the demolition area?

Do we know for sure what's happening with Roger David yet?
I'd be really happy if that building was retained - it's arguably the best of the lot.

The City Store's been sub-Target/Big W for a while now.
