In fairness, the thing that's right next to those steps is a public utility (a steam plant to supply heating to some of the older buildings, IIRC) which could not be touched. But the fact remains that it was farcical to consider them a useful contribution to the public realm.

Work to start within 6 weeks!

From The City Messenger:
Student plan green light

22 Apr 10 @ 12:01pm by Emily Charrison

WORK on a 15-storey student apartment complex in Synagogue Place is expected to start by June.

First approved in 2008, the project was re-examined by the City Council’s Development Assessment Panel last week after Hindmarsh Development SA decided to scale back the number of apartments from the original 140 rooms and 18 affordable units.

The revised layout features 60 two-bedroom student apartments and 18 two-bedroom affordable units, each with individual balconies.

The previously approved ground floor cafe with outdoor dining will remain in the new proposal, as well as a common area, lounge and kitchen.

Hindmarsh property manager Morry Canala said work on the $25 million tower - built on the site of two old retail buildings next to Target - would start by June and be completed in time for the 2012 academic year.

He said the project, known as the Globe Apartments, was scaled back because it would have “increased market appeal” and “better amenities”.

“We are very excited about this project’s ability to deliver much needed affordable student housing in close proximity to both Adelaide University and the University of South Australia,” he said.

“The development will provide accommodation which will integrate with the local community and have a positive economic impact.”

Bit of a shame to lose the current buildings (it's the Market Bazaar/Tuxedo Cat site, yes?), but more people living in the area is certainly welcome (so long as it doesn't restrict the nightlife potential of Synagogue Pl).

i really do think we stand to lose more than we have to gain if this development goes ahead.
we're losing a fantastic arts venue and potentially jeopardising the future of a popular city nightclub.
and for a few crappy shoebox student apartments. there are other sites more suitable than the tuxedo cat site.

sad to see the Tuxedo cat building go, however student apartments bring an enormous amount of street life, cafe/pub life that luxury apartments dont. I reckon there are plently of other sites that would be great for a rooftop bar. I do hope that market can survive somewhere. Would hate to see that go.
btw one thing that has made me sad is seeing the big star record shop and the other store down near Dangerfield shutdown. However a new little independent record store has just opned on Pulteney Street, just before Hindmarsh Sq :)

Yes, we've lost two but gained three; the one you mentioned, Mr Music off Bent Street, and the turntablism centric one on Wyatt Street.

so that's what that fence was errected on synagogue place.. i thought they might have been getting ready to knock down the Grand hall behind the masonic lodge for another apartment project which has probably been can'd because of the GFC, we'd been having lectures in the grand hall earlier this year but had to move halfway thru first semester.

Buildings have all been demolished and application for superstructure has been submitted.

This should start to go up pretty fast from November.

What's been knocked down is the building(s) where the Market Bazaar and Tuxedo Cat were. Is all gone! The trader from some of Market Bazaar has moved into the old John Martin's arcade behind the Hotel Richmond.
