The Advertiser today (12 May) reports the commencement of construction for a 300 room student apartment venue on Hindley Street. A joint venture between Macquarie Group, Built Environs and Southbank Group. Is this (140 North Tce) the development they are referring to?

No that is Spark 88 on Hindley street.

Hmmm...nothing like being up to date with what's happening in this city. Perhaps they could have said contruction began 'last year'.

This development is a step closer as I drove past tonight and saw that all the tenancies in the building currently on site are now vacant.

They currently have development approval for 2x18 level 53m buildings.

They are seeking a new development approval for the new ammended design which will involve 1x18 level 53m tower (north tower) and 1x20 level 59m tower (south tower).

so does that mean they get approval for demolition and then while they are demolishing the old building they will *hopefully* get approval for the new design? Like 400KWS (although hopefully this moves quicker than that)

Another height increase. This is now above the height limit for the area. Would I be right in thinking this site is behind the Hindley Street hotel site which is 82m. They probably thought they could get away with a height increase. here's hoping.

Looks like a common strategy amongst developers. Get approval, then send re-application for approval at new height. Does this in effect more successfully allow higher buildings in the long run than by making the original proposal the full height. Seems like a strategy to get around bldg heights. Hope they get there.

Am I right in this assumption or too cynical?
