THE 10-storey apartment complex proposed for the former Channel 7 site in Gilberton has received a cool response from the community.

Watersun has lodged plans with Walkerville Council for its Park Tce development, which includes three apartment buildings with height limits between six and 10 storeys.

Historian Lyn O’Grady, who was against the State Government’s plan to increase height limits on the site, said the buildings were too high for the heritage area.

“Not only will it visually impact on the parklands and the Linear Park but also overshadow nearby old Gilberton with houses dating from the 1860s,” she said.

After viewing the plans for the site, both the Walkerville Residents Association and Walkerville Society said they had concerns.

Walkerville Residents Association chairwoman Wendy Vodopivec said the 10-storey height limit would set a precedent for further medium to high-density development, which would destroy the historic character of the suburb.

“Gilberton is a heritage residential area that should be protected and preserved because it represents the early history of our state and helps to make Adelaide the unique place it is today,” she said.

The City North Messenger reported last month the State Government had changed the site’s zoning to allow up to 10 storeys on the site, despite objections from the Walkerville Council.

Three buildings Watersun proposes for the site contain 217 apartments, with the penthouses offering views over the Botanic Gardens and across to the city.

Property Council of SA executive director Nathan Paine said the extra apartments would boost affordable housing near the city.

Watersun project director Garry Garside said the development had been designed “to take advantage of being on a major arterial road into the CBD”.

“Therefore we feel the proposed scaled height from six storeys is suitable for the location,” he said.

“Not only will it visually impact on the parklands and the Linear Park but also overshadow nearby old Gilberton with houses dating from the 1860s,” she said.

CONTENTIOUS plans for a 10-storey apartment complex on the former Channel 7 site will go ahead.

The $180 million development was approved by Walkerville’s Development Assessment Panel last night, March 28, despite opposition from nearby residents.

Objectors who spoke at last night’s meeting were concerned the development would overshadow surrounding buildings and homes.

Public consultation on the plans attracted four responses - all objecting to the development.

The development application by Watersun was for 221-units over three buildings.

Former Planning Minister Paul Holloway last November changed zoning around the site to allow development up to 10 storeys .
