well while walking around town today and to the bus stop on the way home, I noticed how some of the new Asian students try and beat the heat - they wear jeans, shirt and a jacket, and one of them I saw with a thick hood over her head. I wonder if that works    Hopefully after they finish their uni degree, they might know to take their jacket off.

btw, its hot, and Tasmania is looking very nice

Record overnight temperature during Adelaide heatwave

Article from: The Advertiser

MATT WILLIAMS

January 28, 2009 10:10am

11am - 39.7C: A TEMPERATURE of 33.9C sounds good, doesn't it? Sadly, that was as low as it got on a record hot night in Adelaide - and now the trams are off as well.

The unenviable overnight record beat the 33.5C recorded on January 1, 1982, and the mark of 33.2 on January 10, 1939.

The AdelaideNow thermometer was already over 35C by 7am today as the temperature heads towards an expected 44C.

The weather bureau expects the temperature to hit 40C by 9am and fire danger remains extreme. South Australia's army of CFS volunteers is on standby to tackle multiple threats across the state and small fires have already started overnight, some of these sparked by lightning from teasing, almost rainless storms north of Adelaide.

Fires have been reported at Port Julia on Yorke Peninsula, Port Broughton, Port Brooker, near Port Lincoln and Clare.

Meanwhile, buses will replace trams between the morning and night peak hour periods, as the city's public transport struggles to cope under the strain of Adelaide's extreme heat.

The last AM peak hour tram will leave Glenelg at 9.30am and City West at 10.15am.

The PM peak hour tram service will start again at 2.15pm at Glenelg and 2.45pm at City West.

Buses and train services are running as scheduled.

For more information visit Adelaidemetro.com or call the InfoLine on 8210 1000.

Commuters were warned last night that the city's public transport system is "not out of the woods yet" after it literally buckled under the strain of extraordinary 45C heat yesterday. The closing of the Noarlunga train line and tram services sparked confusion on North Terrace during the afternoon city peak hour.

A section of the line at Clarence Park buckled in the extreme heat and repair crews were last night trying to straighten the line for the first service this morning.

Acting Transport Minister Paul Holloway said "similar issues may occur on rail services over the continuing unprecedented heatwave over the coming days".

The Transport Department said it expected all regular train, bus and tram services to run this morning. If repairs to the Noarlunga line were not complete, substitute buses would run from 7am today.

"Commuters are encouraged to visit the website (adelaidemetro. com.au) or call the info line prior to travelling and prepare for delays, ensure they have water to drink and/or make alternative travel arrangements where possible," the department advised in a statement.

Dozens of TransAdelaide and hired security staff manned the entrance of the Adelaide Railway Station and tram stops along North Terrace yesterday, advising commuters of alternatives.

More staff handed out bottles of water to train commuters on other lines in a bid to keep them hydrated for their trip home. Taxi ranks along North Terrace filled with commuters as money was no object for most in the 44C heat.

By 5.30pm, dozens of charter buses had lined North Terrace to ferry people to their destinations.

Confusion reigned at Victoria Square, where a security guard was directing tram passengers to shuttle buses outside the SA Water building, only to find some trams kept running. Finally, the Adelaide Metro information line and website confirmed trams had stopped running.

Passenger Mike, who did not want to reveal his surname, said he waited for a bus for more than an hour, only to see a Glenelg-bound tram rolling down King William St.

"They've told us the trams aren't coming, it's appalling," Mike said.

"There's a family over there with a child in 45C heat."

Noarlunga line commuter Liz Ringland said she was not given the right information on how they would return home.

"We were just told to cross the road and wait – we don't know what's going on," she said. "I can understand there's probably not much the Government can do about the heat, but I've got kids in child care I need to pick up at 6pm and now I'm not going to be able to get there in time.

"I can't afford the extra money it costs to keep them there longer so I hope the Government can provide some sort of compensation," she said.

The city's electricity-use record was smashed and water use soared as residents desperately tried to beat the hot temperatures.

Yesterday the temperature had reached 40C by 10am, surpassed the forecast top of 44C at 12.05pm and peaked at 45.7C at 3.31pm. It was still 42C at 8pm.

It is forecast to peak at 40C or hotter again today and for the next three days.

Six days of 40C-plus temperatures would equal the record longest stretch of days with temperatures on or above 40C, which was first set in a January heatwave in 1908.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast temperatures above 35C until at least next Wednesday, which would be a record heatwave in January.

Forecaster Simon Timcke said it "was not impossible" for Adelaide to have another 15-day heatwave, as experienced in March last year.

"We've got a long way to go yet," he said.

Adelaide yesterday fell just 0.4C shy of the record hottest day of 46.1C on January 12, 1939.

Electricity demand surged past the record of 3171 megawatts by 5pm and was increasing into the evening.

At 8.40pm, power was cut to customers in 37 suburbs and towns across the state.

SA Water figures show Adelaide's water consumption on Tuesday, when 43.2C was the maximum, was 710 megalitres, an increase of 132 megalitres on the previous day.

A similar amount of water was expected to be used in Adelaide again yesterday.

The SA Ambulance Service recorded an extra 79 call-outs yesterday and confirmed most of those would have been due to the hot weather.

Tennis SA community tennis events co-ordinator Sarah Linke said the temperatures on Memorial Drive reached 70C.

While the rest of the state was sweltering, residents in Pekina, between Booleroo Centre and Orroroo in the state's north, experienced minor flooding.

Two houses had damaged roofs and trees were down after a storm passed through the town.

If it's going to be so hot, there's no point bumbling along at 43 degrees and being unable to boast about it to the youngfolk in the future - we may as well break all the highest temperature records and have a slight justification for spontaneously combusting.

Also, if I see one more news report shrieking blue murder about Melbourne's dreadful heatwave without mentioning the fact that Adelaide's is hotter (and forecasted to be longer-lasting), I shall get upset and cause some kind of scene.

The extreme heat highlights how inadequate mens clothing is in keeping one comfortable. It is times like these when I wish I was a woman, where it is acceptable to wear hot pants and a bra-like top in public.

One thinks there is an issue of serious concern to be had, questioning your own mankind.
But, I do agree - women have a far wider range of clothing items available, whereas men are limited. One need take a look in a unisex clothing store, and will find that at least 75% is women's clothing. Why the injustice? Is it because women run the fashion industry, they wish to seek vegengance upon men through lacklustre clothing variety and style?
I command a protest be held at once! Boobtubes for men!

Someone at work has suggested I use something similar to alfoil to cover up the western windows. I'll give that a shot tonight :)

The western wall is absolutely soaking all this lovely heat in also. So i'm going to move all our pot plants to that wall, and erect my car tent there if I can be buggered setting it up.

Our A/C is stuffed at work, so i'll be working from home tomorrow.

Just hang some spare bed covers or towels, or rather then waste all that alfoil, use old newspapers.
Wont eliminate the heat either way, but it will reduce it.

Using interpeak train services is another way to beat the heat. I was on 4 trains, none of which had more then 8 people on board per coach so the aircon was simply lovely. Only around 3 cents per kilometre.
