With regards to the Jade... it's not like it's being closed down due to lack of use. They have just added an additional downstairs bar to the premises.

I don't understand how this forum can advocate so hard on the side of adding life to the city, but is so gleefully pleased with the demolition of one of Adelaide's quirky live music venues.

For shame Sensational Adelaide/Hines, for shame.

seriously if we are moving back to providing "life" to the street, then the Hotel wins hands down.

Then nothing new would get built and we'd still have our low-rise city. Who gets to say what stays and what goes? I too share Ben's sentiments - the Exeter isn't really that great. All it serves is cheap disgusting beer for alternative bogans.

I think the Jade adds more life than the vacant land in the plans.

You know that I frequent Adelaide's top shelf cocktail bars etcetera. You may be surprised that I also treasure the Exeter as Adelaide's premier dive pub. Its level of caked on grunge could not be synthesised. Take a rickety seat out the back, and just soak up the atmos. It's fabulous!

Hands off the Exeter, or you'll met The Wrath of Mono.

Other than that, it's an alright looking development. Looks nice. Not impressed that there's a driveway crossing Grenfell Street. But I am impressed that the entrance to the hotel is on Twin Street and will generate a fair bit of foot traffic.

Edit: Maybe there's some structural problem with the Jade Monkey? Maybe the process of digging foundations for the tower will cause significant damage?

I'm willing to bet they are purely planning to demolish it to make the area quieter, and in future if anyone tries to open a similar venue nearby would complain about the noise.

But it's an inner-city hotel though, much different to people paying top dollar to live in a high-rise apartment building.

Small venues in rented digs come and go. Always happened, always will. Obviously the JM is a terrible looking building from every angle and not the sort of thing a new multi-million dollar hotel would want bordering their property. Years ago I may have sided with the hipsters and described its look as grungy and cool but really it's not, it's just a tatty old joint with a Coopers sign out the front.

Any self respecting hotel would have to build something to block it out and they'd also have to spend big on extra soundproofing/glazing for many levels on that side of the build even though the JM is only a 'part-time' venue whose props could choose to pull the plug at any time. Plus the hotel will have it's own bar/music venue with (I believe) a large outdoor balcony area running down the east side of the building. So now they also eliminate the risk of noise spill into their own venue.

As for foot traffic, the hotel will increase activity in Twin St 24/7 and employ a few hundred people. Win.

Fob it off as "hipster" if you like, but it's one of the most charming venues around in Adelaide. Whilst the sound on stage is never the best, when I was playing it I always enjoyed playing there due to the atmosphere and the type of crowd the Jade attracts (and I can tell you that crowd are not the "hipsters", but generally the crowd that has a big link to the local indie music scene).

The Jade is a vital part of the local music scene, and their support for new up and coming bands is not matched by any other venue. If you're band hasn't played a show before, most venues won't give you a second unless you have some other connection. The Jade however gives you the opportunity to set up a show and get the people in. They have a very different set up, one that I believe is necessary to maintain a healthy music scene in Adelaide.

The empty lanes along either side are what look terrible, not the building itself. And if it is demolished, then we'll be getting more ugly empty gravel covered space.

Last night. The charm is undeniable.



Something tells me the new "venue" at the hotel won't be a shadow of the Jade.

Even the building from the outside looks great. It's just the laneways on each side that could do with a bit of an upgrade.

I'm not sure I understand why people are so happy to see this go.. the hotel development does not hinge on the existence of the Jade. Surely we should be trying to preserve this type of live music venue rather than tear them down and hope something else pops up.

I for one am not happy to see it go. Would much prefer to see it integrated into the solution. Would then be a win-win.
