I think there's plenty of other cinemas of this type around Adelaide, and to be honest I don't think it's all that attractive anyway in my opinion.

I think it's a great opportunity for the owners of the Bay Junction next door to buy it, and then re-think their redevelopment plans.

They could demolish the cinema, perhaps retaining some or all of the front facade if they could work around it, and extend their plans for the new Bay Junction shopping centre to include the site of the cinemas, and possibly even include a small multiplex of modern cinemas within the new shopping centre.

The whole topic seems to be very controversial!

I am currently working on a project "The Impact of the Development of Bay Junction to the Residents and Community of the Glenelg Area." Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

What are the development plans at the current moment? When is development due to start?

I am informed on the Woolworths side of this. The store is due to oficially close on the 1st of January 2009 and not due to reopen for approximately 12 months. Employees have the option to move to the Harbour Town store, as it opening date is close to the closure date of the Glenelg store, or losing their job for about 12 months if they are even offered their jobs again afterwards.

I'm not feeling sympathetic to the company, everyone knows it wouldnt even make a dent in Woolworths for a store to be closed for over 12 months, but it isnt good for any of the employees involved. Many of the companies are not returning to the Bay Junction complex afterwards, causing them unneccesary expense of relocating and possibly the jobs of many.

This will affect the livelyhood of many resients, and even once the construction is completed there is supposed to be an expensive fitness centre instead of the family bakery?

The centre is very run down and tired and a re-development is long overdue in arguably Adelaide's premier seaside suburb. As they say to make an omelette you have to be prepared to break some eggs, and while the employees relocation and closing of stores may be sad...there is really little choice. It would be interesting to know how well they do anyway.
It is in a gateway location and Jetty Rd is prime real estate - in the top 3 of the most expensive retail rates in SA - so the centre is maybe lucky to last as long as it has. A new centre will attract higher paying tenants and quality of retailers.
I also heard that Taplin did buy the cinema next door and obviously that will be added to the re-development.

Any reason why Taplin would retain it as a cinema, rather than incorporate it into the retail development?

i believe a mini-cinema complex makes good sense. A good example is the recently constructed Mitcham Square (http://www.mitchamsquare.com.au) where Wallis Cinemas has its own a bar/lounge arrangement alongside a few small cinema rooms. The italian restaurant immediately below the cinema does a roaring trade outside of normal shopping hours, irrespective of the weather...

Taplin is negotiating to buy the cinema, & its preferred option is to keep it as a cinema, according to Messenger:

THE fate of Glenelg Cinema appears to rest in the hands of developer Andrew Taplin who is currently negotiating to buy the site
from Wallis Theatres.

Mr Taplin, who is planning a $65 million redevelopment of his Bay Junction Shopping Centre which neighbours the cinema site,
wants a movie complex to be part of his upgrade.

He told the Guardian Messenger last week he was having discussions with Wallis although there was a strong field of other bidders,
all with plans to close the cinema.

That's encouraging.

The store is due to oficially close on the 1st of January 2009 and not due to reopen for approximately 12 months. This is not quite true. If the Glenelg supermarket does close for the redevelopment all staff will be transferred to other Woolworths supermarkets. No one will lose their jobs.

True but i still believe it's a negative thing for the employees. The front end of Woolworths Glenelg alone has over 30 people, and each of these people will not be available to have as many hours at a different store
This will only be a positive development if the trend of "improvement" continues down the whole of Jetty Road. And hopefully for one, it will not all be controlled by Taplin, and two Glenelg maintains some of the old-fashioned charm that makes it special ... no more high rises !

Glenelg is a basket case IMO. The only thing historic about it is it's history - but you can hardly see that any more. Personally I'd much rather go to Henley, Semaphore or Brighton for a visit to the beach. Of course that's just my opinion, but they've ruined Glenelg to the point where I don't particularly care what more they do to it.

Theres nothing wrong with high rises in the right place. Glenelg is the home for many elderly residents and this area may become too expensive for them too live anymore.

Its just a shame Glenelg beach has been ruined so much. It used to be one of best beaches around and now it has the marina between Glenelg and West Beach clogging the sand flow, and high rises blocking off the view and feeling of the beach the beach is close to ruined.
Sure, Semaphore and Henely are good beaches, but thats not the point.

Does everyone want Glenelg turn to "the suburb by the beach"? Catch a tram from the city to... the city

Are there still going to resedential appartments in the top of new Bay Junction complex?
