What a strange place!

Do people not realise how easy and stress-free it is to get better donuts closer to where they live?

If you want a donut in the middle of the night (for some weird reason) just get one from any OTR store. The chocolate donuts are quite nice, and not too sweet!

Yeah, I agree. I haven't said anything about this topic, but I do like Krispy Kreme's donuts and am glad we never have to buy them interstate again, but I honestly don't see how people can spend such a long time in a queue for donuts. I won't begrudge them, but I sure couldn't line up that long. Don't have the patience.

How did this obsession even begin? I first had them around 2005/6 in Sydney, but back then nobody in Adelaide really seemed to care about them. Then a few years later everyone suddenly started becoming obsessed with them.

That said, I don't care for NIMBY adelaidenow comments saying "ohh, diabetes" or "aren't I better than everyone else because I don't like KK?". Let people enjoy themselves if that's what they want. They aren't hurting me by lining up for ages, so it's their choice if that's how they want to spend their time and money.

But I guess it's true that at the end of the day, you CAN just buy some similar ones from Coles, or get a nice chocolate/sprinkled doughnut from most good bakeries or even an OTR, as pushbutton said. I guess I might pop in one day once the queues are pretty much dead, but I'm in no rush anyway.

Probably from the store at the Domestic Terminal at Melbourne Airport. People started buying boxes of donuts from there to take home.

12-pack of fresh and quite nice donuts can be found at Woolies for a few bucks

They must have made major improvements to their dough then. I wouldn't personally be remotely tempted by Woolies donuts, after having some very ordinary ones years ago.

Maybe they have improved though?

Are there any donuts you do like

The best ones in my opinion are the chocolate covered or jam-filled ones at Breadtop if I'm in the mood for freshly baked donuts, or the hot cinnamon ones from Donut King if I'm in the mood for hot ones.

Not that I eat either very often.

A NEW Krispy Kreme store earmarked for the city will open within three months, according to its developers, as the doughnut maker capitalises on surging demand.

Adelaide City Council has granted planning permission for the $200,000 store in Gouger Street.

Developers expect construction to be completed by November.

The council said it was classed as a “category 1” project, meaning no public notification was required under its development plan.

The approved development includes a cafe fit-out, shopfront alterations and corporate signage.

A company spokeswoman said work was expected to start “any day”.

The operator of the SA franchise is Doughboys Manufacturing SA, a family business owned by the Shahin family, who preside over the On The Run service station network.

The company’s flagship store has already opened at West Croydon, in the western suburbs, another will be unveiled at Bedford Park while two more are planned at undisclosed locations.

The West Croydon store has been the centre of controversy amid growing frustration over congestion and anti-social behaviour including a knife-wielding bandit robbed two teenagers of six boxes of doughnuts.

Krispy Kreme has 20 stores across Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

I heard today that the line is down to about a 40 minute wait for donuts. This is almost a month after opening.

Not sure where they're planning to go in Bedford Park. The OTR servo is in Darlington, and the most ideal building in the area (drive through Chinese restaurant) is in St Marys I believe, and I haven't heard of that closing down. The retail block on the corner of South/Flinders has been partly acquired for the Darlington project so I doubt they'll take a shopfront here either.

Undisclosed locations, I've heard of Bolivar (both in this thread and outside, no valid source however), and I'd guess in the North East area to get an even spread, maybe Campbelltown area.

I cant believe that a donut shop with average donuts has gotten this much attention.

Krispy Kreme and the Shahin crooks must be sitting back laughing at at everyone while counting the millions more they are making.

I think with KK being so popular here we could potentially see more then 5 stores open over the
next 2-3 years. I think there's enough demand for 3 stores in the city and then another 6 or 7
in the suburbs.

So many potential locations where KK could do well - Glenelg, Norwood, Adelaide Airport,
O'Connell street, Rundle Street, Unley, Marion, Tea Tree Plaza, etc. It's good for Adelaide.

Just watch. It'll be like it was interstate, hype will cause growth for a few years then the novelty will wear off and 2/3rds of the outlets will close.

Id like to see them bring Starbucks back, not because I like it (their coffee tastes like shit) but because my wife loves it. I know Peregrine would never embark on this journey as they already have their own coffee brand, but I think Adelaide is ready to sell out again for another global consumer's brand like Starbucks.

The reason Starbucks did so poorly in Australia is twofold. One, we're already up to our eyeballs in coffee shops. Two, in general most coffee in Adelaide is of a high standard, so it was hard for Starschmucks to shift their burnt coffee and poorly steamed milk. They work in other places where there is no saturation of quality coffee joints. In the US Starbucks is a step up from their standard coffee, which is mostly filter sat near boiling point all day.

There is an interesting doco about coffee in the US and how the quality was dropped three times over history. Sadly I can't remember the name of it. It might be Black Coffee by PBS.

Anyone remember Johnny Rockets on Rundle Street back in 1995 / 1996 ?

That was an interesting place, an American diner which I believe was the only one
in Australia.

I think if KK find good locations in Adelaide then there's the potential for 8 - 10 stores.

I tend to think KK just opened up a heap of stores in NSW really quickly without managing things properly.
Maybe some of the stores that closed down were not in good locations.
