Are you serious about Grenfell Street? And there are no highways in the city. That's why we need to keep the main thoroughfares (like Grote-Wakefield) open so to alleviate congestion. As for closing off the whole CBD sending all traffic around the city, wouldn't that cause massive problems? And try taking that to an election and see what kind of backlash you'll get there! Come on.

If you don't want an underpass, how about putting the square over the current road? Something similar to the design of Parliament House in Canberra, where there is grass on top. One side of this knoll could be used for viewing the big screens mentioned. At the top in the middle you can put the statue of Queen Victoria (or a massive flag pole). The road could also be lowered by a metre or so.

Cheers

Come to think of it, I really don't know why we bother with local government most of the time (sorry to all the Councilors that frequent S-A, i'm sure you're all dandy folk)
Major Project? Where's the kickback for the government from the developer?

Cheers

It has already been said that the budget doesn't allow for something like that at this time. However there is nothing about this plan that prevents it being done a decade or two from now if there is the need.

What's so bad about the current proposal that it will need extensive terraforming and hills and overpasses and underpasses and whatever down the track? It's a square in the middle of the city. Keep it flat for pete's sake.

there is no need for overpasses or underpasses. adelaide isnt that busy, and there are plenty of roads going east/west that can be used instead. but this job needs to be done properly, or not done at all.

in reality they could re-assess how traffic works in the CBD totally

there would be a good argument for some 1 way streets to be introduced to promote smoother moving traffic especially in peak hour.

Something the Councillor could look at next election :)

^^^ Adelaidians can't even cope with a simple zipper merge as it is, I don't think the negating of one way streets is within the realms of the average driver's capabilities here.

Rhino and Capitalist - so true, but the place is so well planned there does not seem much need for such skills development. It has constantly amazed me that the current road diagram caters so well. At least you ALWAYS know where you are going - never been lost in Adelaide CBD. Brisbane is a place full of one ways - good way to get lost if you are not there a lot.Roads are narrower, windy, not level - so visibility at any distance is not good, safety has to be poorer. Count your blessings guys!

ADELAIDE - TOWARDS A GREATER CITY SKYLINE

I actually don't believe we'd have any problems negotiating one-way streets, and indeed have advocated this in earlier posts. I was having a little dig at "negating of one-way streets". :)

well you can tell I never studied English at the top level :p
ne·gate (n-gt)
tr.v. ne·gat·ed, ne·gat·ing, ne·gates
1. To make ineffective or invalid; nullify.
2. To rule out; deny. See Synonyms at deny.
I guess I was the one doing the negating of the one way street idea! Ha

I'm glad you still got my point however. I truly believe one way streets are beyond us though. Our driving skills as a city in general are HORRIBLE! I drive south road on a daily basis in the peak hours (against the city traffic but it's still busy nonetheless) and the general attitudes of driver's on our roads really grind my gears. If I had a dollar for every person driving next to you who speeds up to purposely take up the room in the lane (so not to let you in) when they see your indicator blink, i'd be a filthy rich man.

I think what you are describing are driving habits, and I totally agree that here in Adelaide our driving habits are some of the worst, and most selfish, I've seen in this country. However, I don't think our driving skills are that bad. or your english, for that matter, it was a gentle jibe :)
