If you haven't got yourself organised with pre-purchase, you get no change.

Many frustrating hold ups occur when some stooge fumbles around for small change and then presents the driver with a $20 note which he/she then has to change out of his/her own pocket.
Are you serious?

Punishing people who forget to bring the correct money or pre purchase their tickets is criminal. I catch public transport daily and majority of people already have tickets or don't use a note past the $10 mark when purchasing a ticket. So it's not really a major issue.

What should happen though, is the introduction of prepaid buses for some peak services, similar to Sydney. This will mean you wont be able to purchase a metroticket on the bus which will end those annoying hold ups.
which he/she then has to change out of his/her own pocket.
Doesn't the driver get fully compensated for that money?

Yes dammit. We shouldn't have to give drivers enough money for change - we need that cash to invest overnight on the international money markets. Jeez, if it wasn't for the damn customers, we could run and efficient public transport system.

And all those old people who need low floor buses - get rid of them and you can buy cheaper buses.

And those commuters who only want to travel in peak hours - get rid of them and you only need buses to cope with average loads and can get a much higher utilisation of investment.

And just think. If we had no public transport, we would have much more money to invest elsewhere, and not have to put up with pesky customers who want change, or services that run on time. Gah! Why can't people see this? :wallbash: :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

From Adelaide Now
Adelaide the most car-reliant city in the nation, its citizens eschewing public transport

AFFORDABLE all-day CBD parking is turning commuters away from public transport as new figures show Adelaide is Australia's most car-reliant city.
The RAA says employers should reduce the number of salary packages involving cars which are part of a workplace fleet, to help stem the number of vehicles entering the CBD.
Latest Census figures show nearly two-thirds, or 64 per cent, of Adelaideans drive to work - the most of any capital city. RAA public affairs senior manager Matthew Hanton said the cheaper cost of all-day carparking in the CBD, which ranges mostly between $12 and $15, compared to other capital cities did nothing to dissuade commuters from driving to work.
"There is a lot of parking space in the city," Mr Hanton said.
"There is an appetite there for people to use public transport but the current system is just not meeting their needs."
Mr Hanton said the cost of all-day parking should be increased after public transport services became more reliable and efficient.
He suggested a mix of other measures to boost public transport patronage, including decreasing the cost of public transport fares and providing more cross-suburb services for commuters to travel from one side of town to another, rather than being forced to travel into the city and board another service.
Figures obtained by The Advertiser in August showed public transport patronage had slumped by 2.44 million boardings in the past year.
The relatively cheap early-bird rates across CBD carparks, which would cost a Monday to Friday worker as little as $57.50 a week, compare with an adult 10-trip multi-trip ticket cost of $31.90.
"A lot of people who are time-poor would rather pay the money to park. The cost (of public transport) is definitely something that needs to be looked at."
Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said Adelaide City Council, which owns nine UParks, had no plans to increase the cost of all-day parking to deter commuters from driving.
A spokeswoman for Transport Services Minister Chloe Fox said the Government was working to provide commuters with a more modern, efficient and reliable public transport system.

It seems that they are no longer using google maps for trip planning, using opentripplanner instead.

It doesn't seem as good - the mapping is based on openstreetmap by the looks of it. Its dodgy, my parents street is completely missing from the map!

A lot of map data was lost on OpenStreetMap when a licencing change was enforced when original mappers did not agree with the change. It can be mapped again, just someone needs to do it under the new licencing.

Yet on a positive note, it's otherwise super up-to-date.

honesty, I reckon people would accept the cost if there was a small level of consistency.

I'd also add, the form of transport - mainly buses, would be a huge disincentive

And the closing down of parts of the rail system for long periods didn't have any effect either? :?:

I think the article did identify some of the reasons why public transport is on the nose here.
Public transport is by world standard very expensive here, for a very much sub-standard service. There are some cross suburban routes, but these are all serviced by bus, and very slow, no one in their right mind with thier own car would even contemplate a trip by bus which was more expensive than the cost of fuel and took 3 times as long.
Attempts to upgrade the train/tram system seem to have stalled, and any mention of cross suburban train routes, even using existing lines without the need to go into Adelaide Station seem to get derided here.
All state goventments have jumped on to the increased density programme, in order to use existing infastructure, and cram a larger population into existing areas, All these extra people, while generating economic activity, come at a cost and they dont seem to understand the amount of upgrade this existing public transport infastructure requires to enable the community to commute without cars. Cant have it both ways.

Not really, Adelaide Metro is quite affordable compared to other cities especially if your travelling from Gawler or Aldinga.

A friend sent me the following message today: 'Saw a prototype permanently coupled 3000 with 3100 trailer.'

Anyone else seen the same?
