Thanks for the photos. I'm really curious now about the section being demolished this week which is visible from Rundle Mall and located behind the demolished tableware department. It is obviously just corridors from the store into something, but I can't now see how those corridors could have lead into the carpark because the carpark would appear to be further back so does anyone know where those corridors lead? They're the ones shown in the top photo in the last post.

I checked it out today (cladding is completely removed). The corridors appear to lead to a marked emergency exit in Lindes Lane, which has not been obstructed by the gantry. I never took much notice of the location of the emergency / fire exits in the store, as I never had any reason to use them, but looks like a narrow building was constructed in Lindes Lane specifically for emergencies. Could have been a major disaster if the old store had caught fire, being in quite a few buildings of dubious fire safety (?).pushbutton wrote:Thanks for the photos. You may just make it out here - the narrow red brick building with the concrete lintel & fire alarm bell on the right:

Thanks for the info. Looking at the various aerial images I'm surprised at how many buildings made up the Harris Scarfe store. It's not just one building as I had always thought.

That's pretty typical of older buildings. It was common for a series of adjacent buildings to be bought by a single business over time, or for a business to extend or alter their premises as their requirements changed. A favourite example of mine would be Powell's Books in Portland - you can see some photos of their rambling store in this thread.pushbutton wrote:Thanks for the info. Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

That looks like it was taken from Adelaide Central Plaza rather than David Jones.

Hi everyone! Sorry no camera again but went past today for another look and there's been significant progress.
On the Grenfell st side the scaffolding has been reduced in height and you can now clearly see that the corner of the building on Grenfell st closest to Da Costa arcade has been reduced to single storey level, and the building behind that has had a very large section also demolished down to one level.
From Rundle Mall you can see that the fire escape corridor section previously discussed and located behind the demolished tableware dept has been all but completely demolished, with just a few bits of steel framework remaining.
Also several workers were visible through the glassless windows of the main Rundle Mall building removing internal walls on level one.
So it looks like demolition is gathering pace although it seems there is still some asbestos to be removed in parts which is delaying the demolition of those areas (especially bits of the roof / ceiling near Grenfell st).

I know. Sorry I can't help it I just find it slightly strange that some people would refer to it as David Jones! It's a bit like some people calling the Myer Centre "Myer" when it's obviously not Myer. Not a big deal it's just something I find odd!

From Sunday - more old signage, "Events" now demolished, and Grenfell Street median moved south:

Sorry to be a downer, but this image just makes clear what we're losing. Instead of a row of varied and interesting façades, we'll be getting one big bland, standardised wall. In other words, we lose what makes Rundle Mall/Street special. Shame.

I'm with you.
Hate watching this come down - particularly the mall side. I know it's more expensive but they really could have done something special if they integrated those Mall shop-fronts that are worth keeping with the new development.
I recently read some old DAC minutes about the demolition of Roger David (still not sure if it's happening, but those minutes did show that the DA was amended to allow it) and part of the reasoning was that it would be preferable to have one consistent facade on the mall side. Um, no - especially given what the proposed facade looks like.
