As at 8 Aug permanent railings are be installed on the lower (2-5 ) level Balconies. Work is just about to start on level 18 at the north west corner. A side by side view.

Vue is up to level 23 in the core and 18 in floor plates. Another five core rises to go then the LMR.

Excuse the dodgy phone photos.

Makes quite the impact when looking down King William Street.

Looking at Pikey's picture makes me wish that the podium were extended to the height of the roof. I assume that the Brecknock is heritage listed and unlikely to ever go, but without significant height next to the Vue building, I feel as though the tower proper of the building will kinda stick out like dog's balls, as opposed to the podium ending at level 7-8.

While I'm at it, the Asian restaurant over the other side of the road also stands out. It's funny that quarter-of-a-billion dollars of investments have gone into the surrounding buildings over the last decade, but that is still a single story building, on a corner, no less. :P

I'm not sure it was ever official or just a 'vision' thing but there are concept drawings about a building being built 'inside' the Brecknock (ie leaving the KWS and Gilbert St facing bits untouched) on page 1 of this thread (back when the proposal for the site was for the Hills building).

Completely agree regarding the Asian Restaurant. What surprises me, that site has been vacant on and off for the last few years; surely there would be developers who'd have expressed interested in the site?...

It was sold about a year ago. It's only a matter of time.

Where exactly are you guys talking about? Is it the corner of Gilles and KWS? Wouldn't mind seeing something there. Wave has a slightly ugly blank wall there facing KWS.

Would also love to see another "bookend" tower on the other corner of KWS and South Terrace, and also something on the empty NW corner of King William and Gilbert Streets. Perhaps wishful thinking, but then again Vue was probably considered wishful thinking two years ago.

As at Friday 21 Aug 2015 now at level 19, view from Gilbert St and from south west side (in the parklands).

The more that I look at the growing glass facade of this tower, the more I feel it's disappointing. On overcast days, the reflective qualities look quite good, however, as is the case today when the glass receives full sun, the facade becomes quite translucent, and the brown becomes very prominent and dull. I don't think the quality of the facade compliments the design of the building.

It could end up being the equivalent of a supermodel dressed in a hessian bag.

Not an appropriate simile - attractive people look good in anything (those bastards!)

To try and articulate my point, I went for a walk just then and took four pictures, surprisingly enough all in different sunlit conditions, ranging from the first being in direct sunlight, to the last being completely overcast, which articulated my points perfectly.

First pic: full sun. As you can see the brown doesn't look fantastic. Next to no reflections.

Image

Second pic: slightly darker lighting, reflections more pronounced.

Image

Third pic: lighter again, brown is becoming obvious.

Image

Fouth pic: Fully overcast. High reflective quality.

Image

I hope this illustrates my ramblings! Having said that, on closer inspection there could be a protective film on the glazing that hasn't been removed as yet...

Anyhow...
