I'm glad someone understands that Dubai is an ugly, hopeless Palm tree ridden mess and not some luxurious paradise that it has been made out to be in recent years. And why? Because of a few showy supertalls and tacky resorts… boy this generation really has become obsessed with all that is plastic.

Judging Dubai by that image is worse than judging Rundle Mall by its current state (which I admit I am guilty of)!
I don't want to hijack this thread anymore, so feel free to discuss in "the pub" where I have posted a few examples of Dubais breathtaking developments (some of which are in fact complete)!

Not sure if this is the place for this, but in the mall tonight, was very let down by the lack of Christmas lights. In fact lighting in the whole city is a real let down. The street lights even seem dim (or am I getting old). Adelaide at night looks very dark and dingy with lots of shadows, and even more shady characters getting around. By comparison I have noticed in other cities, street lights in the CBD's are as bright as day, and almost any significant feature is highlighted with a lighting display. Adelaide could do so much better with these simple things.

I think the development has really limited their options.
I'm hoping next year they really go all out.

ACC are swithing all of thier street and pathway lighting to new LED's. It's in iniatial stages of roll out but you can see some of the results especially around light square. Quite impressive change with brighter and whiter light from the yellow that was favoured in the 80's and 90's.

Very much needed. As much as I love Adelaide, I have noticed the distinct lack of lighting - same over station tracks - like a cave.
V ery glad to read about the LED's

Vee, I noticed a couple of very ugly building facades in your last post, and seem to remember there was a move a couple of years back to uncover some of the heritage facades hidden underneath them (and others in the Mall/Hindley Street). Does anybody know if this is still happening, and who was responsible for it? I would assume it is the responsibility of the building owners, but surely the council could subsidise renovations, considering that their master plan included removing clutter from the edges of the mall to divert peoples eyes to the buildings which flank the sides.

I think the move you are recalling was the council announcing a fund to subsidise such restorations. I'm not sure that anyone has made use of it so far, though there are a good number of properties along Rundle and Hindley streets that are needy candidates.

Never see anyone dropping it but there's Chewing gum all over the place already. Probably need some dedicated bins and then stiff fines.
Apparently it cost the ACC $200,000 a year to remove.

Loving the new treatment to the front of the Myer Centre. The black looks sleek and classy. Now for the facade on the upper floors???

Classy is one of the last words I would use to describe the Myer Centre building. They should have left the original heritage Myer Emporium that was there previously, now that would look very classy in the present day and much nicer than what we have now.

I'd love to know roughly how much weight those pillars out the front of it are designed to support. Just thinking about it, that building looks like one of the most physically heavy buildings in Adelaide.
The old Emporium does look extremely good, but I don't completely hate the Myer Centre. I reckon it would've looked a lot better if they'd kept the Emporium and perhaps moved Myer itself somewhere else. Perhaps across the otherside of the mall, where City Cross is?
