The great thing about Australia is our freedom of speech.

However, if we are going to knock a community organisation (like Paradise Community Church) that many people support and volunteer their time in assisting people in prison, the homeless, drug addicts, young people and thousands of others across Adelaide, we should have all the facts first. It is easy for any of us to knock organisations we are not part of - but it may not be for the good of our community to do so. I am sure that a small hotel in Adelaide may take more turnover than the Paradise church if people want to claim it is (only) a business.

Many of the developments that we all get excited about on sensational-adelaide, such as casino and hotel developments , have not helped as many people over the years as the Paradise church has (IMHO).

I love this blog, recommend it to others all the time, am involved in the property market, and support Paradise church and how it aims to help people.

I hope we can all respect others beliefs.

And isnt it good that in the last 2 years the disused GU cinemas in Hindley st, the old Nighttrain in Light Square and the disused Word bookstore in Currie St have all had leases and upgrading as a result of churches expanding, and bringing more people into the city?

You know that the tax collected from churchs, and owned businesses (sanatrium etc) would probably go along way to funding effective welfare programs?

Well said mate - We should get the facts first. Bias causes too many aberrations in much of our thinking.

What people?

If there are more new venues people are expected to attend or go - they will not be there all the time, but congregations can be quite large - so extra people in the city. Should add to extra life about the place.

I guess it would go the same for new local punk, rock, etc venues such as the Higher Ground, Blackmarket and stuff.

That's a bit naive, James. Petrol tax could probably go a long way towards giving us a brilliant road system, but it doesn't. The bulk of tax gets spent on general revenue, with only a very small ammount getting spent on improving the field of play from which the tax came.

the old Night Train has become a nightclub and live music venue.

ONE of the city’s dormant laneways, which was brought to life at the last Fringe, is set to become a permanent entertainment venue.

Arcade Lane licensee Ross Stanley is in talks to have the pop-up bar made permanent in time for the 2011 summer trade.

“The market has definitely embraced the alternative use of these spaces,” Mr Stanley said.

“Developing the lanes with this in mind will add much needed vibrancy and excitement to the city.”

A wedding reception for 85 people, catered for by city businesses, was held at Arcade Lane last month.

“Never before (in South Australia) has an urban lane been used for wedding receptions, corporate functions,” Mr Stanley said.

The lane is locked in to be a venue at the 2011 Fringe Festival, with 120 comedy, cabaret, live-music and burlesque acts already booked.

The Adelaide City Council and Rundle Mall Management Authority have been working together to activate laneways across the city, with Arcade Lane the first project.

I reckon it is a fantastic idea and long over due

I was only walking past the lane way past Jade Monkey where there is some great open space that would be fantastic in the summer for a wine bar/light meals place kind of a beer garden thing (yeah I can't work that out either, hopefully you get my drift)

this kind of development puts the faith back in ACC

An application has been lodged with the ACC to transform that open space into an open air cafe.
