I've walked past the building on 3 occasions yesterday and this morning, I just don't see it.
the HS building is not worthy of being heritage listed, it is the equivalent of any run of the mill developments being put through at the moment.
Comparing it to the Regent Arcade or Adelaide Arcade IMO reflects the different standard of building we are talking about.
I can acknowledge that the HS building is Old...but outside of that it is a cheap arse building that is being replaced by something equally as uninspiring.

Exactly right. The old Harris Scarfe was just a utilitarian building with nothing going for it except its age. Inside it was ugly & an inconvenience to get around. I'm sad that we replaced the old Myer with the half-empty building there currently, but I won't be losing any sleep over this.Waewick wrote:I've walked past the building on 3 occasions yesterday and this morning, I just don't see it.

Well if people would reread my post again, you would notice that I carefully mentioned the regretable loss of both the Sanity and the Roger David facades rather than the Harris Scarfe facade itself. Not to say that the Sanity and Dusk buildings have any real architectural merit but I would rather them stand than what seems to be going up for the location.
The point is that while I don't think preserving every old building is practical, when they are being replaced by completely uninspiring boxes and being demolished in LARGE volume then I feel that more needs to be done to stop this kind of development.
I would be fine with losing Harris Scarfe on its own, even for such a bland development like this, but this project is ripping out a massive chunk of the Rundle Mall street scape and will completely change the look and atmosphere of the Mall.

sorry arki - I assumed the larger building was your focus
that being said, I don't recall the RD or Sanity stores being that fantastic either.
There are however some very nice buildings down Rundle mall which hope get retained over the years*
*remembering we are here to improve not to retain\\
edit - checked the RD building - perhaps on the cuspdamn ugly in it's current form (however it is still trading - is it infact going to be knocked down?)
on my walk back - on that side of the mall, the Walsh and Pharmacy buildgins to be looked like keepers as well as the one adjacent to the Pharmacy building - and the buildings with Country Road, OPSM and Witchery as tenants look fairly impressive buildings along with a couple of others....the rest it would bowl over

I agree the facade of the new Rundle Place doesn't seem very inspiring. Not much can be done about it now but I'd have preferred something equally as modern, but much more interesting. I would have preferred to think that such factors would be taken into account at all levels and by all parties in the planning and design and approval process, but sadly they doesn't seem to be!

went into the city last night again to check out the site again and will put some more photos on my flickr over the weekend. It got me thinking though when i saw the story on ten news tonight that with all the excavation work, the workers would be digging up earth that may not have been touched for over 80 years. I wonder if they will find anything? And if ten news will do a follow up story? Also we still havent heard anything about the "archives" discussed in earlier posts that were in the basement...

They must be about to really speed things up then if it's all going to be down in 2 weeks. I could believe it though because they do seem to have reached a stage now where most of it could be done with a large excavator (and there is one parked outside the Grenfell street facade today).
The tallest parts of the building might have to be done more slowly though and the same goes for the so far un-fenced Rundle Mall facade.
