Couple of dodgy phone pics a friend just texted me.

That silver art feature looks great.

Not really sure the plastic tents and posters add to the symmetry and architectural aesthetics of the Festival theatre? The rest looks good it's going to look spectacular when all finished, lights on and water features flowing!

Looks magic at night too. Lit from behind. The wall it's on is planned to be a green wall. Will be even better once that's grown. The whole thing's taking shape beautifully.

Not meaning to be picky, but the posters and plastic tent are obviously just temporary, and the festival theatre doesn't exactly have much in the way of symmetry or architectural merit. It's actually in need of a major makeover at the very least (but there's a separate thread for that)!

Sorry, did you just say that the Festival Theatre has no means of Architectural Merit?

It was built on time, but is not timeless.

Rubbish. The Festival Centre has a lot of architectural merit. It's just looking a little tired due to the lack of money spent on it, and the butchering of the surrounds in the last plaza "upgrade".

Exactly. The old girl has fine bones, she just need some new clothes and make up.

Specifically, for external works: (1) A plaza upgrade; (2) Replace those horrible 1970's concrete balustrades with modern glass ones like the footbridge (the upgraded bistro section next to the footbridge stairs has modern glass balustrades); (2) Cover the brown external brickwork with something more befitting a major public building, like a high quality stone finish; (4) Upgrade exterior glazing with some more contemporary.

That should see it through another few decades!

Undoubtedly the interior needs a spruce up too. I doubt their would be many 1970's designed interiors anywhere in the world that would still look good now.

Agree with the sentiments, the Festival Theatre has potential to be a visual icon for Adelaide and the Riverbank, not at all dissimilar to Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay.

I still classify the Adelaide Festival Theatre as our most iconic building (most probably along with SAHRMI now). Of course it needs some love, but for it's time it is a magnificent building and probably the best in our state. Saying it has no architectural merit is pretty poor and arrogant on your behalf.

Saying I'm arrogant is a personal attack on me, and that is not on!

Me saying a building has no architectural merit is me contributing my personal opinion, and that is all it is. It's not a fact, it's an opinion.

This may be the internet, but we can still show a bit of courtesy and respect. If you disagree with someones opinion you just say you disagree (and say your own opinion if you wish).

Why do some people treat the internet as a forum for insulting people they don't even know?
