Just a thought I had today. I was walking along North Terrace, was just admiring things up close that I've never really spent time looking at. King Edward Statue, Boer War statue etc.

I kind of felt like a tourist.


Then I got to the parliament. And this brings me to my issue.

I personally think the parliament is our greatest building, its brilliant. But if I were a tourist and I wanted to take a photo of it...id be taking a photo of some tree.

So I was thinking, why do we have trees blocking the view of South Australias most magnificent building? It just looks strange IMO. Why dont we cut the 4-5 trees in front of the parliament?

They wanted to cut down those trees for the tram line.

Build the tram line, and plant another 5 trees to replace the one that was cut down... Its not that hard!

IF we never cut down trees when Adelaide was established we would still be living is little huts!

Hang on, I thought the Opposition was only opposed to the trees being removed along the medium strip for the tram line extension.

Though I agree the trees infront of Parliament House should be removed, hopefully it will happen once they redevelop that part of North Terrace.

Councillors;

A) When are you ever going to get around to the Development Plan Review, particularly, concerning height limitations. They have to be abolished soon enough, and I am not the only one sick of the ACC's consistent procrastinating on this issue. It seems like I'll be dead before I see newspaper headlines reading "Open skies for development".

B) What is happening with the 3D model that you were supposedly 'in the process of establishing' for the CBD, that was supposed to assist in the planning decisions of the city - concerning shadowing impacts, building heights, integration with streetscape, etc.

I quite like the trees in front of Parliament House, to be perfectly honest.

I just like trees.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason...

Patience Shuz, things do not happen overnight and planning staff have been working full time responding to state government changes re residential code and new strategy of late…there is lots going on!

Regarding the review of the Development Plan , it finalised and I informed S-A of this when that happend. Now begins the process of changing the Development Plan for each issue which takes 2 years and costs $100-400K depending on the topic.

This is a State Government run and defined process I might stress before you have a go at council anyone!

There are finite resources (especially in planning area where staff are hard to get and expensive) and heritage listing and green buildings will come first because that is the will of the council – I am but one councilor and that is life.

I think a review of building heights will begin in 2 years and finish around 2012 –its something I plan to go to the next election over that’s for sure!

As for 3D model – being prepared now…I am sure you will hear something soon.

Just started my planning degree and would love to get my hands dirty for below minimum wage!!

Read: when the purse strings of developers and investors alike are hopefully far less tight than they are now.

Clr Yarwood: Do you happen to have any further information on the saga around the proposed 18 level student apartment building at 199-200 North Terrace? It has left many of us wondering what exactly is going on behind closed doors.
