While on a bus heading west at the eastern end of Rundle St and turning right onto East Tce yesterday, I noticed the vista corridor of Rundle-Hindley. Good sight.

Had a sneak peak at the pole & catenary lighting wire design for Rundle Mall yesterday. Looking good!

The poles at the mall ends are ~20m tall (that's 5-6 storeys!), comprised of 16m of mild steel, with a 4m spire atop in stainless steel. I'm not sure of the exact catenary lighting wire height, but somewhere around ~6 metres i believe. To be deployed in phases along the mall length.

Seems it's still stuck in discussions with some building owners (DJ, Myer, and others) about attaching the wires to their buildings.

I've no pictures of the actual designs, just some overview stuff. Bit of a tease i know. Sorry about that.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Won't the wires look kind of ugly in the daytime?

Not nearly as ugly or impractical as light post

Depends what type of light post. Contemporary ones are certainly ugly, but Rundle Mall never had many of them anyway.

The historic ornate grand lamp posts from yesteryear were gorgeous, but mostly were not retained.

the new posts are akin to AFL goal posts. Tapered. Slick material. will look good imho. They are not exactly light posts, in that no lights will be hung from them.

I also liked the posts of yesteryear, but re-creating old is rarely done well.

Is the paving in the new section safe for people to walk on? Maybe they need speed restrictions like Hindley st.

Noooooo...... :sly:

So those property owners who refused to allow them to hang the wires from the buildings, really think that is the better option for both the mall and their tenants?

That's purely a matter of opinion. I don't like traditional ones, but I love a good contemporary design.

I can spot a few differences actually.

What's with the giant billboard like thing though?

Banners hanging either side of the pole, I think.

How much extra would it cost to get them to rearrange the pavers in an aesthetically pleasing way?

Considering how much has been spent, and the generally high quality of the job overall, it really seems a shame not to get it right.

What's not right about them? They're exactly to spec as per the master plan. As a regular visitor to the mall, I think they look great.

Love them, massive improvement and adds a bit of visual interest.
I think they've done a great job.

Looking forward to see the pavers under lights when the catenary lights go up.
