West Lakes Mall upgade to start this month, four year years after approval by Charles Sturt Council

A MAJOR overhaul of West Lakes Mall will start this month, almost four years after the plans were approved.

A Westfield spokeswoman has confirmed work will start at the end of this month and is expected to be finished 12 months later.

The multi-million dollar expansion will include a Target and 36 specialty shops.

West Lakes Cards and Gifts co-owner Anne Campbell welcomed the news and said the development would be better for business in the future, when the economy recovers.

"The present economic climate is not favourable for an extension, but all planners have to look beyond that," she said.

It is surprising to see yet another retail development in these economic times, not too mention the squeeze online shopping is putting on retail. Much better news rather than seeing empty shops in the malls.

It's definitely happening. I went past this morning and they've already set up the site offices and bricked up one of the entrances into David Jones.

LOL! It's not a very difficult centre to find your way around. I think you'll be fine!

The lift that went from outside ANZ bank up to the back of JB Hifi has been demolished (even though it was only a few years old) as have the stairs next to it.

The canopy of the Harris Scarfe entrance (which was also new) and the canopy over the old David Jones store entrance have also both been removed.

Piling has been done on about a third of the site so far and the bases of several concrete pillars have been installed. Things are moving quite impressively fast I must say!

The ramp that will lead up to the new rooftop carpark is well and truly under construction, with at least half of the formwork and scaffolding in place.

I am really impressed with how fast this development is progressing!

It will be a concrete box by the sounds of things (only way really to build it that fast). Still though, hopefully it will add something to the overall amenity of the centre.
