[COM] Victoria Square Upgrade - $24m
[COM] Re: What next for Victoria Square?
It's all totally irrelevant as we're without any commitment to actually funding and completing the project from both the state and the ACC.
At this stage, it just looks like history repeating. Please prove me wrong.

urban, who says people don't cry out waste when that sort of money is spent on lawyers and accountants?urban wrote:Why is it that people won't blink if $500,000 is spent on lawyers or accountants but if it is suggested to spend that money on a design for our city's most important public space they will scream in protest at the waste.
Will, it may be an investment to those that can profit from it. Why doesn't Kazanski come up with a design himself and put it forward to the government? If he really cared he should do it for free. I know that you guys here on this forum would do it if you had the means and so would I.Will wrote:You should think of the $500 000 as an investment.

Grote and Wakefield Streets don't have to be closed off at the square, they could easily underground this thoroughfare and give back a big piece of square to the people. Tell me why would you use a ring route when a direct route is best?omada wrote:why we can't we close grote/wakefield corridor? ffs how many streets do we want, if people want to go to the airport, use the ring routes?

Hey that is a good idea. Sometimes I think that we here on this forum are the best people to help our city prosper.Ho Really wrote:[[

Could we not have our own design competition, here on the forum?

If someone wants to create a new thread, with the rules/guidelines. Well keep conversation posts to a minimum on the thread, and I could announce it on the forum/front page. There's no prize money involved and it's purely for fun, but we could submit all our ideas to the city council and re-enter there

[COM] Re: What next for Victoria Square?
True a direct route is best, I wonder what the cost of this tunnel would be though? Anyone have any idea?Ho Really Wrote:

But I still think there is nothing wrong with restricting traffic in the city, we don't have to use the cities roads as highways, I mean its meant to be a pedestrian friendly city, so it won't be the end of the world if grote/wakefield is closed.. but if the tunnel can be installed at a reasonable cost, then I guess its a win win situation

If anyone's seen or heard of Cloudgate AKA "the bean" in Chicago's Millennium Park, I would suggest that we need something along these lines to attach people to the square. People need a reason to visit the place and once you have a nice attraction then it brings in the people and the shops to cater for them.

We already have something like that:Al wrote:If anyone's seen or heard of Cloudgate AKA "the bean" in Chicago's Millennium Park, I would suggest that we need something along these lines to attach people to the square. More expensive than just closing it obviuosly. Maybe using one of the South Road underpasses as reference, anyone give a stab at it?omada wrote:True a direct route is best, I wonder what the cost of this tunnel would be though? Anyone have any idea?
I fully understand the idea of a pedestrian city aided by world-best public transport. I would love that, but I think we still need several major thoroughfares like Grote-Wakefield and King William Streets open somehow. We could close off Flinders, Franklin, Gouger and Angas Streets, but then where would that east-west traffic go? Not an easy solution closing streets or even making them one-way as we have seen (or rather heard). I guess it all will hinge on how good our public transport will be.But I still think there is nothing wrong with restricting traffic in the city, we don't have to use the cities roads as highways, I mean its meant to be a pedestrian friendly city, so it won't be the end of the world if grote/wakefield is closed.. but if the tunnel can be installed at a reasonable cost, then I guess its a win win situation

Yes we do.... I think the bean was modeled off our balls but they screwed up and melted it in the manufacturing process. It's nicer than the fountain in Vic square don't you think?Cruise Control wrote:We already have something like that:

And are you being serious in the first sentence? lol
[COM] Re: What next for Victoria Square?
lol, i dont think he is cruise
After looking at that... it makes our balls look boring
i like it, but not sure about sutmhng like that in vic sq.
also, not much of a fan of the fountain.... i think a new water feature would go nicely .... maybe could incorperate those rockets of water which shoot up from the ground lol, theyre cool.
