They're parklets. I like them, especially the winning entry, which looks like quite a nice space with the undulating roof and fabric walls. The dog is a fun bit of whimsy.

Is scary that a "whimsy" like that can take out second prize - would love to know what else the judging panel is involved with when these sorts of things win competitions.....I'm happy for the tinkering around with parklets as one small measure of vibrancy, but it remains simlpy tinkering

That dog is awsome. Nice to see a few fun elements in city design. I think wtf is exactly the sort of reaction that is expected along with 'I'll meet you at the dog and have lunch'.

That's the old 'Coffee Pot'. I used to remember that as a kid in school. I never frequented the place but it was rumoured that you could buy both of the things in the name of the cafe!

Pot pfft. You'd be lucky to get a coffee. It was full of freeloading goth kids.
And when I say free-loading goth kids, I should know, I used to be one of them. (The owner used to send us down to Woolies to buy provisions for the place lol)
I'm amazed (and a little bit misty eyed) that the interior is still intact. And that the Tuxedo Cats are doing something with it bodes well.

It's not just you.
A lot of our original tiny laneways have been removed and most of what is left is proper commercial access lanes. There's still a few of the tiny "nightcart"* lanes left in the older residential areas.
(*google it if you don't know what they were lol)
Currently in Melbourne and have been noticing a few of the laneways here ... and yes they are generally true laneways with no vehicular access and very narrow and intimate. Love them!
The only comparable 'lanes' in Adelaide in terms of width and scale are James Place and Peel Street ... and there are currently good things happening on Peel St at the moment.
The other streets we could consider as 'lanes' in Adelaide like Leigh St, Bank St etc are actually more like Little Collins St and Little Bourke St, which are secondary streets in Melbourne, not lanes.
Hence Adelaide's lanes will need to take a different form to those in Melbourne, because ours generally need to take vehicular traffic too. The focus needs to be a re-prioritisation of road space away from car dominance to make these streets more pleasant for pedestrians and other activities to take place. Some good ideas I've seen in Melb:
- different paving treatments from other major streets ... Cobblestones, pavers etc. If cost is an issue, even just pave the end of the street differently (where it abuts the major street)
- more trees! Take out a handful of car parks and plant some trees in the parking bays
- unique lighting. Heritage lighting where suited to the character of the street looks great and helps create an intimate atmosphere. Otherwise other interesting lighting can be used beyond the standard stobie pole lights
- use of bollards
- retractable awnings can be used to great effect to define an outdoor dining zone
