The thing is the govt doesn't know what they want there....and I doubt they have the money to develop it properly anyway....it should just be advertised internationally for tender and hope some billionaire will develop it (but they would probably want a second casino license to make it work.)
Perhaps both you and the Advertiser should read the brief and understand the process before espousing this shit, over 140 Architectural firms have spent thousands of hours of unpaid time developed these initial concepts, no one is getting a $900,000 prize for concept sketches. Theses concepts have been judged by an international panel, the 6 winning entries will now be funded to further develop their concepts further using public feedback and many hours of community consultation. Once again a great concept of involving the public, architects, public displays, has been trashed by poor Advertiser reporting and small minded nit wits who read the Advertisers sensational one sided negative view of the world and believe it!
As far as the $900,000 is concerned, the good will and work already submitted by the hundreds of Architects involved would already be worth several millions if we had to pay for it. The process alone has raised the awareness of Adelaide, the site, the state, all around the world. Many hundreds of people have visited the site, know more about Adelaide and contributed in numerous public consultations.
If I was a local or international Architect who had worked hard to contributed to this process and reading all this uninformed crap I would be gravely offended and probably chose to contribute else where in future.

Have a look at the winning entries for melbournes Flinders street station competition and you may just change your mind. What we have been served up is at best mediocrity.

I agree 100% Skyliner.....absolute shite concepts....no point throwing more good money or time on them imho.
to Dog if you go to the Govts own website you will see (n.15 in the FAQs) the six short listed entrants receive $100k each in stage 1 and then in stage 2 the winner gets $200k, 2nd gets $70k and 3rd gets $30k ... Total being $900k in prizes!!!
Then there is no guarantee the govt has the funds or will develop it anyway...
I ain't trying to bag the shit out of it for no reason but think it's fundamentally flawed when no-one can tell us what is actually needed/ has demand for and will add value/be a commercial success (and not just another white elephant like the Wine centre next door). Entries so far include (more) art galleries/museums and student accom. ..... pretty un-inspiring.
And I agree 100% with Ben... we have been served absolute mediocrity compared to Melbourne's Flinders Street design competition.

Agree somewhat on the point where the form must follow the function in this case. This is like the State Liberal's former plan for the Torrens Lake area, loads of orange boxes with no business case for use.

You are looking at the second stage presentations for the Flinders Street rail project, and comparing them to the first stage of the Adelaide project. Melbourne's Flinders street project had 117 first stage entrants, like in Adelaide they had about a month to prepare concepts. The winners then progressed to the second stage using their "prizes" as funds and 5 months to produce the classy presentations you are comparing the Adelaide concepts with!
I suggest you go back and have a look at Melbourne's 117 first stage entrants before being harsh on the Adelaide RAH site concepts.
And as far as museums, galleries, student accommodation, this is a public consultation project about the use of the site, there have been and are numerous opportunities for people like you to give better ideas, just a matter of contributing.

Ok Dog, let's look at some of those first stage entrants (specifically, some of the ones that were shortlisted and later developed). As you can see, they may have been limited to three boards as well, but even at that first stage they had been developed a lot more, and had considerable more thought applied.
HASSELL + Herzog & de Meuron:
1,
2,
3
Eduardo Velasquez + Manuel Alejandro Pineda + Santiago Medina:
1,
2,
3
Zaha Hadid Limited & BVN Architecture Pty Ltd:
1,
2,
3

I'm confused! Why they are even producing renders at this stage? Where are the complete "holistic" proposals? I agree with most posters - form follows function, I do hope the entrants have considered this, the proof will be in the next stage i'm sure. Lets not despair just yet, although I do agree there are grounds for concern.

Have finally had the chance to see those that didn't make it and there are some really interesting and striking concepts there. Have to say though that I haven't had the time to read the brief so can't say much about the extent to which they meet it.
It does appear though that at this stage, the judging panel aren't all that interested in amazing architecture, which can and will be refined through the process, but the general ideas put forward. The overall winning contribution is likely to end up quite different to that entrant's first proposal and it's a different story altogether what (if anything) ends up getting built.
What I was expecting however, was to find out who was on the judging panel and see that they were a bunch of government reps who would not have the slightest clue about design. If you look at it though, it's a very impressive group who know exactly what they're doing. I'm happy to give them the benefit of the doubt for now and see what comes out of the process - as hard as that might be when one of the shortlisted entries has a faux mountain complete with faux snow FFS!

Why do almost all the concept designs have a spider somewhere amongst? I don't understand...

That's
Maman by Louise Bourgeois >
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maman
It's moved around a bit, starting at Tate Modern and then going to, amongst other places, Guggenheim Bilbao & Mori Art Museum (where I saw it a few years ago), and it's now permanently at the Qatar National Convention Centre. As a fairly famous sculpture, it seems to become a bit of a go-to for architectural renders of public spaces.
Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons also seems to be used in a few of the concepts as well.

This isn't actually terrible, so it's a runaway leader at this stage.

It would be soooo cool to have one of those Maman sculptures in Adelaide!

Here is one of those sculptures in Rappongi Hills Tokyo. It is massive! I never new what it was.
The Mori Tower in the background is an amazing building itself . Skydeck is not as good as Tokyo Skytree but still great views , with massive foyers

That's where I saw it as well. There's only one though (although there are some smaller sculptures in the series), and it's simply just moved. From the sounds of it, Qatar will be a permanent home from now on.
I find Roppongi Hills to be a tad over the top, although the Mori Art Museum is very good. If I'm in the area, I prefer Midtown with the 21_21 Design Sight gallery (not that I make a habit of hanging around Roppongi).

Miles off topic. But, why do Roppongi Hills and the Mori Art Museum sound like they should be in New Zealand?
