THE cessation of Tiger Airways and industrial disputes at Qantas contributed to Adelaide Airport recording decreases in passenger numbers, average revenues and average margins during 2011-12, a report says.
Revenue was down 9.3 per cent, off the back of a 4 per cent fall in passenger numbers.
The airport’s total revenue of $78 million included $14 million from car parking.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission today released its annual Airport Monitoring Report for 2011-12.
The ACCC is required to report annually on the performance of Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney airports.
"The 2011-12 report shows that monitored airports continued to be profitable but the overall quality of service was lower at all airports compared with the previous year," ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said.
A combination of strong domestic demand from fly-in fly-out passengers, increased international passengers and higher average prices for some services contributed to higher aeronautical revenues at all monitored airports, except for Adelaide.
Overall ratings for the quality of service at each of the monitored airports decreased in 2011-12. For the first time since 2007-08 no airport achieved an overall rating of at least ‘good’.
"Overall, Sydney Airport is perhaps of greatest concern given the pattern of price and earnings increases, lower service standards and low investment levels compared with other airports," Sims said.
Adelaide Airport’s overall quality of service ratings continued to be rated the second highest of all monitored airports.
This is the last year that Adelaide Airport will be monitored by the ACCC.

The last line concerns me a little. Why are the ACCC dropping Adelaide Airport??

Adelaide Airport Ltd (AAL) has unsuccessfully sought the re-establishment of an Adelaide-Auckland service by Qantas in a submission to the Australian competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Draft determination to grant authorisation to an alliance between Qantas and Emirates, AAL said the re-establishment of the Auckland service would be of significant benefit for tourism, business and trade between South Australia and New Zealand. It would also introduce both competition and a premium product on the route. The ACCC has since approved the alliance, requiring Qantas and Emirates to maintain capacity on the four major city pairs currently flown. As a result, people wishing to fly with Qantas from Adelaide to New Zealand must travel via Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. This accounts for more than half the total traffic between SA and New Zealand.
That is total bullshit! The ACCC is supposed to stand up for fair trade, but all they are doing is protecting the flights for the East coast so that they don't have to pay more money, while condemning Adelaide residents to having to pay almost twice as much as their east coast counterparts! The ACCC is totally screwing us over!

Cost-cutting. All government departments are trying to find savings. Adelaide isn't one of the four "gateway" airports and this would be an easily-justifiable $$$ save for the ACCC.bm7500 wrote:The last line concerns me a little. Why are the ACCC dropping Adelaide Airport??

To be honest if the ACCC doesn't include Adelaide or Hobart or Canberra then it really isn't representative of an organisation that purports to represent Australian.

Totally an educated guess. And I'm probably being a bit cynical. But there's no doubt (in my opinion as a Federal Government employee) that a Government department or agency would jump at the chance to save a few dollars in the current environment.bm7500 wrote:Is that an educated guess or a fact?

In any case, I don't think the report is purporting to represent the whole of Australia; the ACCC is just doing what the Government has told it to do. The Government is concerned that the market power of our major airport is of such an extent that it could be abused. Hence, the Government has requested that those airports be monitored. More recently, however, the Productivity Commission has expressed its opinion that it's only the four biggest airports that have market power "sufficient to warrant policy attention".
Here's the full text from the report:
In its 2011 inquiry into the economic regulation of airport services, the Productivity Commission (PC) recommended that Adelaide Airport be removed from the ACCC’s price and quality of service monitoring at Australia’s major airports. The Australian Government agreed with this recommendation and issued new directions on 12 June 2012, directing that the ACCC monitor the prices, costs and profits related to the supply of aeronautical and car parking services at the four specified airports and excluding Adelaide Airport from the monitoring regime. As a result, this report will be the final ACCC Airport Monitoring Report (AMR) to feature Adelaide Airport under the current regime.
Following this year’s report, Adelaide Airport will be required to join the second-tier price and quality of service reporting process established by the National Aviation Policy White Paper in December 2009. This is a self-administered scheme, where the airport will be expected to disclose on its website:
• prices of aeronautical services
• prices of car parking services
• various quality of service outcomes
• the airport complaint-handling processes and outcomes.
In addition, the Australian Government intends that airports under this scheme will publicly disclose the results of their customer/passenger satisfaction surveys.

Remember on this too that this Feb only had 28 days compared to 29 last year, so technically, domestic passengers are ahead of last year when adjusted for the extra day. Very impressive international figures too! (although coming from a small base).Shahkar wrote:For the month of February, a total of 540,283 passed through ADL compared to 539,297 last year, a total increase of 0.18%. Maximus, you just beat me to this one by seconds.
It's only a 'definite maybe' but it shows that Air Asia X still has Adelaide on its radar
