I think that was Pong... anyway, at the moment the Lantern can't display dynamically generated content, so everything would have to be pre-generated. I'll be interested to see how they make dynamic input work with their Hippo-based system... I know I'm still a student, and I know I don't know much about engineering business practices yet, but Hippo just seems to be a weird way of controlling the lantern, especially when so much more could be done with a custom-coded system. I guess it's all about the money...

Not so much money as risk. The classic engineering mistake, especially in tech fields, is to want to build everything - that increases your risk exposure on all sorts of areas that, by themselves, aren't adding much value. If they're late, you're whole project's late, if they fail, the whole project's failed. The superior choice is to build only those parts that play directly to your strengths and to which your specific skills can add serious value. For Fusion, perhaps that is concept, design, and content management. For the rest you buy something suitable that exists right now - not something that will get released in 6 months, that's just another risk. You can always improve the system later if you decide that you should add something extra.

In a few years time you'll graduate from uni and start working in the real world. If you're working for a
software development company then you'll get to write code and develop software. If you're working
for say a government department or a company such as fusion that doesn't specialise in software development
then you'll probably get frustrated with the fact that manager's working above you prefer to buy software rather than develop it.

After taking a visit to Adelaide last week I had a look at the lantern and it just doesn't seem bright enough or large enough. It was less exciting than I thought it would be. Hardly anyone was stopping to look at it, like no one could care to watch it. Adding sound should spruce it up a bit!
Perhaps I've been spoiled by experiencing the large displays in Vegas that outshine everything.

Yeah, expecting a Vegas-like thrill was probably a bit over the top.
It's a cool visual addition to a previously hideous looking carpark but it's not something that's going to stop everyone in their tracks with awe every time they see it. I honestly believe linking it up to loud (and likely crap pop/dance) music will make being in it's vicinity a real turn off, especially if it's blasting from the carpark hard enough to be heard across the street for people watching the display.

yeah i think music should be left to special 'events' or used sparingly and to good effect to give people more to visit the lantern

It's been up for quite some time now, and as expected people become used to it and wont stop to look as much. I still see people stopping and looking though. Music wouldn't add anything to it. It's not like the Vegas Strip where you have tourists milling up and down looking at all the sidewalk spectacular shows that are on 15 minute repeat. It's on a city street nearby accommodation.
I think only for special events should the thing be synced with music/DJ/fireworks. I hope the council's planing a NYE show in a similar style to the Lantern's opening?

To be honest a couple of days after the opening, no one really cared about it. Only a hand few of people were interested
I think once the Rundle Mall restaurant is built, it will be more popular. Plus advertising it more would help aswell

music could be continualy transmitted, but
silently on a certain radio frequency, so you can "dial in" and listen if you choose

Don't worry about people not looking at it all the time. It's like a public statue, it's not a failure if we're not all gawking at it and walking into things because we're so distracted.
