I thought this was corruption the state government made a new law where it could overrule whoever it was that does the planning approval for these things and gave the tick for this development and for a shopping centre at victor harbor I think it was both owned by the same developer who donated to the political party

Spewing it'll take 6,000 months just to get the foundations done

Well it's June. Wonder if the approval has now lapsed or if they applied for an extension.

I'll just leave this here....
Yet another delay on former Le Cornu site at North Adelaide
THE Le Cornu site will sit idle for at least another year after the Makris Group missed its deadline to start work on the latest proposal for Adelaide’s most notorious vacant block.
But the developers say their $200 million residential, retail and hotel development will not suffer the fate of the string of failed proposals put up for the site over the past 25 years. The Makris Group’s plans were approved two years ago but work was required to start by June 30. When it missed the cut off, the State Government’s Development Assessment Commission granted a one-year extension.
A spokesman for the Makris Group said the delay would “allow its consulting team to further refine some design elements and to streamline construction programming”.
Work on the site must start before June 30 next year or the approval will lapse. The Makris Group applied for the extension in March and it was granted in May. While he is disappointed with the delay, Adelaide City Councillor Phillip Martin is “relieved to hear it is still going ahead. But it will be another year before activity,” he said. “It’s a barren wasteland. In many respects, the failure to develop has hindered O’Connell St.”
Cr Martin said the delay in construction was causing a flow on effect in North Adelaide. “From the council’s perspective, we are unwilling to spend on the street until the building commences,” he said. “It could lead to upheaval of the street. We would not look at infrastructure work until after it is done. My plea to the Makris Group is to please get a bulldozer started.”
North Adelaide Society chair Ed Briedis “seriously doubted” the project would happen. “It makes a mockery of the fast-tracking process the State Government has given the developer,” Mr Briedis said. “The developer may have a good reason for the delay. But he’s not letting the rest of the world know what it is.” Mr Briedis has “seen all the proposals” in his 25 years as chair of the society. “This one is certainly over the top.”
The Planning Department was asked why the extension was granted but did not respond.
The site has been vacant since 1989 and three development plans have since been put up only to fall over. Con Makris bought the site in 2001 from Wallis Cinemas for an estimated $7 million.

Oh FFS
Just sell the site and allow someone else to develop it at a much
faster pace.
A spokesman for the Makris Group said the delay would “allow its consulting team to further refine some design elements and to streamline construction programming”.
What a load of.......

We can all appreciate Adelaide is going forwards but it is mentalities and prominent sites being under developed or sitting idle like this that separate us from other cities that are simply more prosperous.
Does anyone know who owns the LeCornu on Anzac Highway? Its a large well located site, will be interesting to see what happens. Something in the next 20 years would be nice

It's just this site. The blame should squarely be pointed at Makris now.
Prominent vacant land plots can be found across all cities.

Only now? The blame should be squarely pointed at him ever since he bought the land.

I agree there is only him to blame for this site.
But only this site? the Balfours site sat idle for how long? the plot of land behind the courts? How many vacant blocks of land sitting in front of multi story car parks? Port Adelaide waterfront. Now look at U2, Palladium, Mayfair etc and literally every 100m+ proposal over the last few decades. Majority of the southern CBD resembles a country town. I don't think this happens in most other developed cities the size of Adelaide.
I just think this pattern isn't all the developers fault. We have some of the highest land taxes in the world here and are highly regulated. I think the state government and councils could do more to entice developers and sales on those developments, rather than always looking at short term profit.
You take away government funded and the universities developments in recent times and it's not good enough

Last decade, much of the blame was directed at the Adelaide City Council. 6-7 stories was seen as a too tall.....

Who cares.
I personally hope he puts up an ugly multi storey car park.
It's what the arrogant up them selves residents of that suburb(it's not even cbd) deserve.
Where do you think backwards councillors like Moran get elected from? From good folk of North Adelaide who consider footy supporters as beneath them and didn't want Adelaide Oval to be dedevloped.
And at the end of the day it's his land he can do as he pleases with regards to going ahead with an approved development or not.
Some of the whingers can always buy it off him and develop it them selves....

News article today showing that Makris will move the head office to Brisbane, and downsizing their Adelaide office. Con Makris will also continue to live in his Glenelg penthouse.
