i presume you're referring to locals? Creating many destinations works in our favour for tourism as well.

SA receives over 2 million tourists a year (domestic & international). Add 1 extra night of accommodation for a fraction of those people and the benefits quickly add up. Especially if they spend more time in the city - increased spend, vibrancy, etc. Not to mention the flow on 'word of mouth' benefits...

Just to clarify exactly what we are getting for $24M;

Victoria Square / Tarndanyangga Upgrade Initial Masterplan Works.

On the 5th June 2012 Adelaide City Council endorsed $24 million in funding from its own budget to begin rejuvenating Victoria Square / Tarndanyangga.
The funding will transform the Square into a lively, people-focused space for the whole community to enjoy.

It’s the first stage in delivering the full Masterplan and will include:

Northern end:
• A large event space and stage in the Northern end for 5,000-7,000 people
• A generous promenade with seating terraces and shelter
• Shaded walkways, furniture and landscaping, with trees and garden beds
• A water-play feature
• A café near the event lawn

Central and edges:
• An upgrade of the central roadway to be transformed into a plaza for large events
• Suitable pedestrian and cyclist improvements around the corners of the Square

Southern end:
• A café / kiosk will also be put in the Southern end near the tram stop
• The recently state heritage listed Three Rivers Fountain and Queen Victoria statue will be refurbished and relocated within the Square
Other features of the original Masterplan including a tram line and road reconfiguration, a large urban garden and the proposed Kaurna Culture Centre will be staged as further
funding becomes available.

Timeframe:
Work on the contract documentation and procurement process will begin straight away.

Construction is expected to start early 2013 and will finish by December 2013 for use
by the Tour Down Under in January 2014.

forgot to mention previously, now we have adelaide oval as another proposed new venue for live sporting events adding to the list,again i pose the question what will festival square be used for? or do we just spend that money elsewhere instead

This is why I'm glad the retractable tv screen has been deleted from the project. The new event space at Victoria Square could be used for local bands to showcase their talent during the day or night, encouraged by incentives from the city council?

From how I see it, the new Riverbank Southern Plaza is going to be used to telecast major sporting and other events. But for Festival Square, you do raise a valid question as it sounds like it's going to be another Southern Plaza but with more restaurants, bars and touristy things.

There is also another so called 'events space' planned for Rundle Mall, but that is overkill so it should be killed off.

MONARCHISTS are angry the Adelaide City Council plans to sideline the statue of Queen Victoria in the redevelopment of Victoria Square.

Chairman of the Australian Monarchist League SA branch Eric Cummins said the organisation was not happy the statue would be moved from the exact centre of the square.

"The people who named the square held Queen Victoria in great esteem, not merely on the basis of sentiment, but with deep appreciation of all that the monarchy represents," he said.

"Adelaide City Council should preserve the valued testimony afforded by the statues of Queen Victoria and Charles Cameron Kingston, by retaining those statues, along with the flagpoles, in their current positions."

Mr Cummins said the massive show of support for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in the United Kingdom and Australia showed how much support was behind the monarchy.

"It's called public opinion and just as governments can and do ignore it at their ultimate peril, local government is not immune," he said.

An Adelaide City Council spokeswoman said people wanting to know precise details of the $24m redevelopment should not rely on the computer generated "fly-through" because it was "only indicative".

The fly-through shows the statue disappearing but not reappearing at the northern end of the square as promised by the council.

"The Queen Victoria statue will definitely remain in the square; it will need to be moved though and will most likely go to the northern top of the square arguably the most prominent edge," she said.

The spokeswoman said all current statues, monuments and flagpoles would remain within the square.

"As per the stage 1 upgrade, which was approved by Council on Tuesday night, the recently state heritage listed Three Rivers Fountain will be refurbished and relocated to the southern end of the square," she said.

I'm a little confused. Whilst I don't agree with reason for moving the statue on the basis of "the monarchy", but rather from a design perspective - why does the statue even need to be moved at all? They do intend on closing the east-west throughfare eventually, don't they? I quite like it where it is.

But if they had to move it someplace else in the square, it's no big deal really as long as it stays somewhere within the square.
