[COM] Rundle Mall Redevelopment | $30m
[COM] Re: Rundle Mall Redevelopment | $30m
This document lists the various catenary lighting connection points to privately owned buildings. Approved Jan 2015.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Completely pathetic to read such a comment, considering all the changes and achievements of the past few years.ChillyPhilly wrote:Pissant town.
One minor setback, and all the negativity returns.

The poles for the catenary lights are apparently going up tomorrow night.

I did notice on Saturday some of the pits had been dug back open, and boards placed over the top. About time, but shame they couldn't have made the deals with building owners so the poles weren't needed.

My gut feeling tells me this isn't going to look good at all. They've deviated too much from the original concept and it'll just look cheap and tacky - too much compromise.

I think those poles could look pretty good if they're lit at the top like the second image above suggests. Will reserve judgement until the job's done but I don't think that poles vs 100% building anchoring is really going to make too much difference to the overall look of the mall. Am looking forward to seeing the end result...

Just noticed out of the office window that at least one of the posts is now up - outside of City Cross. It's pretty unobtrusive - I cycled, *ahem*, walked my bike right past it this morning and didn't see it...

When walking down the mall though it stuck out like dogs b*alls to me. Especially the one right in the middle of the "unobstructed views of the hills". Totally defeats the purpose of what they were trying to do.

"unobstructed views of the hills" was never one of the primary aims of the redevelopment. It was said by a certain councillor, and the local media have clung to it.Ben wrote:When walking down the mall though it stuck out like dogs b*alls to me. Plus, it's just one post that's 'obstructing' the view. I just popped downstairs and took a look - it's hardly spoiling the vista. Presumably, when the trees are mature you won't be able to see much of the hills from the mall anyway so it's not a big deal in the long term. I still reckon this will look OK - especially if the tops of the poles are lit like the Channel 7 pictures seemed to suggest. Like emergency beacons identifying the ends of the mall so I know where the nearest exit is next time I've had enough of clothes shopping with the missus...

Edit: Tried to upload this walking past this morning and failed.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Jesus Christ, that's hideous.

Apparently there were also questions about whether certain buildings could hold the weight of the lighting system, so the re-design is not just because of failures to obtain building owners' consent.
