Absolutely that the area in front of the car park should also be lined with restaurants and bars, but let's not forget that there are already places facing the river — Star Bar, Allure and Malt Shovel Tap House in the Festival Centre, and Home Ground and Regatta's at the Convention Centre.

The Convention Centre carpark is a bloody mess, straddling two separate carparks either side of the train-lines and removing ground level activation in the process... Before they developed the Convention Centre and whilst they were renewing each train line, there should have been an effort to burry a couple of levels of car parking below the train lines, they wouldn't have interfered with the underground loop planned and it would have allowed for the space they current take up to be used for a Convention Centre frontage on North Terrace and restaurants the Torrens side...claybro wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 1:29 pmAdelaides casino from it's inception was always meant to be a smaller more boutique style,European if you like, as opposed to its eastern counterparts. If the likes of Darwin, Alice Springs or evenPerth have gone down the resort path, it's because they exist as more standalone venues-destinations in their own right. I think the casino suits Adelaides boutique vibe ... but do agree, having that convention carpark overlooking the Torrens is an absolute wasted opportunity... not that this is a problem if the casino.

Facing the Torrens from INSIDE the festival centre is not the same as being on the water front, where you can walk in from the banks of the Torrens.Nathan wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 2:29 pmAbsolutely that the area in front of the car park should also be lined with restaurants and bars, but let's not forget that there are already places facing the river — Star Bar, Allure and Malt Shovel Tap House in the Festival Centre, and Home Ground and Regatta's at the Convention Centre.
If that doesn't make sense, then look at Crown on the Yarra on Google Maps and you'll understand what I'm suggesting.
[COM] Re: SkyCity Adelaide Casino Expansion | 55m | 12 Levels | Hotel
I don't think anyone would go to bars or restaurants under the convention centre. The road / carpark looks tacky but it can be blocked out with stairs, screening / wall / fence and plants etc. You could put a deck or something or just level the grassed area in front. Street view image https://www.google.com/maps/@-34.919562 ... 312!8i6656
The Yarra at Crown is very different the restaurants are built like 10 or 15m from the rivers edge and its flat, if we did that here, you would need to level this https://www.google.com/maps/@-34.919582 ... 312!8i6656 hill and build the restaurants in front of the road / carpark , then what would you do with the large roof deck above the restaurants?
What I would think would look good is steps and grass like what Flinders Uni did in front of the Library area, you level the hill and have a big grass area near the river and gradual tiers until you get to the convention centre entrance level. If you want bars or what not, provide like a small commercial kitchen and have pop up bars on the convention centre forecourt / deck and the grassed tiered steps.

That's exactly what I'm suggesting should be done, like the Crown/Yarra. In our case it would block out the car park/road, as I posted in an earlier post.TorrensSA wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 5:16 pmI don't think anyone would go to bars or restaurants under the convention centre. There is nothing in my posts that says bars should be built in the car park under the convention centre.
Who cares if you need to level part of the area. It's a big nothing area at the moment.
What would you do with the roof deck above the bars/restaurants? It could merely be an extension of the above existing walkways. Or why couldn't some venues be two levels and have an 'outdoor' dining or drinking area on that second level?

Ehhh, the style of Adelaide casino was more a product of the time than anything else. It wasn't until the 90s that the Eastern states got their casinos.
[COM] Re: SkyCity Adelaide Casino Expansion | 55m | 12 Levels | Hotel
Australia's first 'legal' casino was in Hobart in '73. Darwin got theirs in '79. Melbourne got Crown in '94. Don't know about the rest. Fun fact - never been in one.

It was publicised at the time of development as a European style casino, rather than a Vegas americanised one. Yes the decor was an 80's version of a heritage conversion, but the intent was very definitely there to create that atmosphere, rather than the time of which it was built. Sky City destroyed its original ambience and very definitely turned it in to a cheap version of a second rate Vegas joint.Nort wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 9:21 pmclaybro wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 1:29 pmAdelaides casino from it's inception was always meant to be a smaller more boutique style,European if you like, as opposed to its eastern counterparts. All the more reason it should have been restored properly as a central train station and in a grander way particularly with the intention to one day have an underground loop around the city, the upper levels being a boutique hotel perhaps, and a dedicated entertainment, casino & hotel complex built next door over the intercontinental and what's become the expanded convention centre (which it self should have been put between the torrens and nRAH.claybro wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 1:33 pmIt was publicised at the time of development as a European style casino, rather than a Vegas americanised one. Remember everyone, they said the Riverfront will be like Soutbank. It isn't, and under these plans, never will be. They said it will be a key focus for the City, it isn't, and never will be under these plans.
They've fucked it up, it's a massively missed opportunity.
Just imagine what could have been.

I remember in the early days of the adelaide casino there was a formal dress code, with jeans, sneakers and t-shirts not acceptable. These days as long as your wearing clothes and you're over 18 then they will let you in !

Concur with pretty much everything you've said here. And because they've fucked it up, the chances of them rectifying it are (at the very least) another 40/50 years away, which even then, there are more private stakeholders that they need to deal with when that time comes as compared to before. I always admired Labor's will to want to get things done, but I think the negative lasting legacy of Rann's latter years as premier and Weatherill's entirely term was that they stopped planning things thoroughly and rushed into projects so they could pitch their success to the public come election time. Hence the recent tram extension down North Terrace to nowhere... Meanwhile we have the Libs that stall every plan they ever have... Ideally, Labor would have gone about their NRAH and medical precinct, then pitched to the public a new convention centre positioned in front of the Torrens west of the Morphett Bridge and an extensive refurb of the Festival Centre and replacement carpark ONLY THEN if those two things happen, put a tender for an entertainment precinct over the convention centre/InterContinental site(s) on the condition that the winning tender restore the Railway Station building and refit it for other uses. I would have hated to see what Labor came up with for the ORAH site had they won government, the Libs have done a pretty decent job filling the site with workers and new industries meanwhile keeping the momentum on the Indigenous Gallery and demolition process otherwise Labor would probably still be trying to get residential on the site.rev wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 2:23 pmAll the more reason it should have been restored properly as a central train station and in a grander way particularly with the intention to one day have an underground loop around the city, the upper levels being a boutique hotel perhaps, and a dedicated entertainment, casino & hotel complex built next door over the intercontinental and what's become the expanded convention centre (which it self should have been put between the torrens and nRAH.claybro wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 1:33 pmIt was publicised at the time of development as a European style casino, rather than a Vegas americanised one. Tram to nowhere? What are you from The Advertiser or something? The recent tramline extension to the East End goes past the State Library , Art Gallery, the universities, Rundle Mall and Botanic Gardens. The proposed extension to Norwood is good too which was scrapped by Marshall and Co.Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 11:32 pmConcur with pretty much everything you've said here. Hur dur, yes, it goes past all of those things, but my point is in its current form with the timetabling and routing it's not exactly the most useful spur line when most people can do most of what it does on foot and in some cases quicker. Stop playing party politics, both party's are useless.Eurostar wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2020 4:41 pmTram to nowhere? What are you from The Advertiser or something? It'd go to Norwood by now if the government hadn't changed at the last election.Patrick_27 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 6:06 pmHur dur, yes, it goes past all of those things, but my point is in its current form with the timetabling and routing it's not exactly the most useful spur line when most people can do most of what it does on foot and in some cases quicker. Did the people of Norwood (Dunstan electorate) want it though?
