Not the most desirable suburb, but certainly one of the most desirable outer suburbs. It does have a lot going for it: plenty of wide open spaces and not far from the beach.

But geograpical factors work against it: there are no direct roads from the north, so everyone either has to go through Port Noarlunga to reach Dyson Road or head south to reach South Road. This sort of geographical isolation can turn suburbs into ghettos.

However, if the entire suburb is within walking distance of a train station, that all changes. The railway will directly serve may of the major destinations and connect with buses to the rest. And with journey times scarcely longer than the Glenelg Tram, the trains will be a very attractive option. Thanks to the trains, the suburb will not be isolated.

In other news, the Gawler line upgrade is set to start with the section from North Adelaide to Mawson Lakes in "mid-2010". The upgrades of Munno Para and Elizabeth Stations is set to also start in "mid-2010" and be completed in "early 2011".

The Outer Harbor line is still set to reopen in "Late April".

I assume that Torrens Transit will provide the substitute bus services as it has done with the Outer Harbour line,and that Port Depot will use its additional buses(that it is using currently for the OH rail replacement services-about 20 buses) for this service-hopefully enough buses to go round unless some withdrawn buses are brought back into service(ie-O-Bahn Mercedes 0405 Rigids-currently stored at Morphettville Depot).

Just a quick question which I'll put in here since I can't think of a more appropriate place to put it.

How long have the trains had flashing lights on the front of them when they stop at stations?? It's really only just starting to get dark enough for trains to use their lights now when I catch it so I only noticed it for the first time tonight. I thought maybe one of the lights was faulty or something but when I walked past the train I noticed both were flashing in turn. Is this only new on the refurbished trains or has it been happening since they were first done up?

If you're referring to the lights located down by the coupler, I believe the refurbished railcars are progressively having them fitted. On freight locomotives they're usually triggered when the horn is sounded and either stop flashing or switch off completely after 15 to 30 seconds, so I would assume the railcars are the same.

Yeah those are the ones. They were still flashing as the train pulled out of the station so it will be interesting to find out how long they flash for. They seem very American-esque and I've just never seen them before so I thought I'd ask what the deal was :)
