New three-storey wing for Flinders Medical Centre
JOANNA VAUGHAN, POLITICAL REPORTER
November 05, 2007 10:30am
A NEW three-storey wing will be the centrepiece of the $153 million redevelopment of Flinders Medical Centre, the State Government announced today.
The comprehensive overhaul of the 31-year-old hospital will start early next year and is due for completion in 2011.
It will include:
A NEW three-level south wing to be linked to the existing building. It will house medical consulting clinics, a new labour and delivery ward, and an obstetrics and gynaecology ward.
FOUR new state-of-the-art operating theatres, taking the total number to 12.
AN expanded and redeveloped emergency department to cater for an extra 14,000 people a year, taking the department's capacity to 70,000.
A NEW day surgery unit including a recovery area.
A NEW cardiac care unit.
A REFURBISHED acute assessment unit with 17 more beds for a total of 36.
Premier Mike Rann said the redevelopment would be environmentally friendly.
"There will be a 16 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 20 per cent reduction in water use at FMC with this redevelopment," he said.
Health Minister John Hill said the increased capacity was needed to cope with the burgeoning population of the city's southern suburbs.

Just have a read of the comments posted below the article at AdelaideNow.
It is obvious that the Liberal party apparatus is in overdrive, becasue I cannot understand how normal people would whinge about improving public hospitals.

Yeah i know, that person is stupid as she/he talks about how someone she/he knew had to wait for so long at the hospital, but i would think that building improvements would shorten the time spent waiting in the hospital. It was also suggested that the hospital is short staffed and ' where is SA going to find more doctors', but what he/she doesn't realize is that improving the hospital by providing better facilities, new wings etc encourages the expansion of the hospital staff. Typical libs always just complain about SA development/projects, but never actually add any solutions or new ideas.

Wow, the original buildings of FMC are fantastically dull. Good to hear of this expansion - the design reminds me of the new buildings at UniSA. Also, the increase in emergency department capabilities by 14,000 people per year is a hell of a jump - as long as people with relatively minor afflictions don't clog up the place, that's excellent news.

I really hope the update the interchange... the current one is way to small for the current load of buses.

This looks to be commencing. Site is cordoned off, and temporary office blocks have been assembled. Also noticed what I assume is preparatory work taking place, with some men doing something or other to the existing structure. Didn't get too good a look, unfortunately.

Definitely under-construction. Foundation works and all.

Correct. Substructure is complete, superstructure is underway & the general area will look more like a serious building site after this weekend
