Found this rumour on the Adelaide Independent site ...

Catholic Church eyes a sister project to VS1

The Catholic Church is gearing up for another big property investment to complement its Victoria Square Tower VS1.

The next step is rumoured to be VS2 – a 20-storey tower to the east of the Cathedral in Wakefield Street – which is
being planned as the new headquarters of the SA Police Department.

[... ...]

Full story at http://www.independentweekly.com.au/new ... 36506.aspx

I think the 3 storey building they are considering to replace with 20 storey VS2 is Fenescey House (not sure of spelling)
[edit] Fennescey House is the heritage listed stone building facing Wakefield St, & the building I meant is the 3 storey
modern office building behind it. VS2 could complement VS1 well, if built.

Looking at the site in question on Google Earth (30 Wakefield Street?)- I would hope that it is that 2-3 storey campus development directly in front of the Gawler St intersection. There is a historical building on the site directly opposite Wakefield House which I'd imagine would be retained. The idea of a 20 storey tower sounds very promising, add some good height to compliment Wakefield House and I'm sure we wouldn't be dissapointed with the architectural quality, given VS1's outstanding impression.

Given this site's proximity to Vic Square, I'd hope that any new building on the site would be part-residential.

Residential with police headquarters??? Good luck with that one!

There is no way in hell they would sign up in a tower that is mixed use due to security fears. There is enough trouble developing residential towers near the other government buildings adjacent Victoria Square due to security.

Theres already mixed use buildings with government offices.
The Myer Center has(or had, not sure about now) state government offices on the upper levels.
Plus they are moving a few hundred public servants to Westpac House.
Btw, while the subject of SAPOL is up, I had no idea it was the third oldest police force in the world.

Less sensitive government offices may be in mixed use buildings (rare) but I am talking about residential with commercial not retail with commercial. The Myer building is retail and commercial, no residential. Westpac is virtually all commercial with a gym and some retail. Retail and commercial uses generally include higher security (eg monitoring, security etc) and therefore would be considered more safe.

A residential component within a commercial building, particularly used as the police headquarters is unlikely to occur. It is much harder to control what people do in their own private dwellings compared with those retail and commercial uses. Therefore a much higher security risk.

I love the idea of mixed use buildings but some high security commercial uses just don't mix.

This sounds promosing. Thanks for the headsup.

A 20 level tower with pre commitment.

I always thought this was on the cards when they named the first one VS1 I always thought more would follow.

I'm excited by the speculation. It's been a while now since the last big development announcement, so I'm keenly awaiting the next. I think it's a bit odd that the Archdiocese would want to forfeit the suggested location, but it would be nice to have some height on the south side of Wakefield St (especially height visible from Victoria Sq). The idea of 20st Police HQ at the Trims site is nicer still, and would probably connect better with the law precinct (especially if a new court complex is finally built diagonally opposite). Now let us just hope that something comes to fruition quickly.

Where exactly is this going? Are they going to demolish part of the school?

A link to Google Street View would be appreciated.

I have heard that at some stage today the Premier will be announcing that the Police HQ is going ahead on this site!
