Talk about good timing... here's how Glasgow intend to rebuild their historic Glasgow South General Hospital. The contract worth around $900m aud has been awarded to local company Brookfield a couple weeks ago.

I like it.. looks more like a four seasons hotel than a hospital. Can't see why we can't do something like that for the RAH.. :)

Howie, from what I've found the price is around 840m pounds, which works out as $1.5 billion. The aerial site view surprises me, it looks a little Le Corbusier with the towers sitting in a largely open area, a little like the (nearby) tenements that have such a bad name. The whole site is huge, a little less than 1,000 x 500 metres. But then land is cheap in Govan, this location being adjacent to warehouses and the largely empty docklands, and literally next door to the sewage works.

Brookfield wins £500m Glasgow hospital contract

5 November, 2009 | By Michael Lane

Brookfield Europe is understood to have beaten Balfour Beatty and Laing O’Rourke to the £500 million contract to rebuild Glasgow Southern General Hospital.

The Southern General Hospital will be rebuilt and refurbished to form South Glasgow Hospital. It will comprise of an adult acute hospital, a children’s hospital and a laboratory block.

It will be one of the largest acute hospitals in the UK, and one of the most advanced in Europe.

The new hospital will have 1,100 beds, in single-room accommodation, along with 20 modern operating theatres

An estimated 110,000 patients are expected to come through the hospital’s doors every year. It will be home to major specialised services such as renal medicine and transplantation and vascular surgery.

The adult hospital will be integrated with the children’s hospital. There will be separate entrances, but a physical link for patients and staff is planned from the new hospitals into the maternity and neurosciences building.

Works will include infrastructure, enabling, access and sewer systems. The construction contract is due to be awarded in October, to allow work to start on site in November and be completed by summer 2015.

Interesting, because the hospital's own site says (http://www.nhsggc.org.uk/content/defaul ... wsid=10309):
While the £670million contract was not the lowest of the three bids it did represent the best value for money in delivering, and in many cases surpassing, the Board’s ambitions for a gold-standard hospital campus that will serve the West of Scotland for generations to come.

The company behind the successful bid, Brookfield Europe, is a major international builder with vast experience in world class healthcare developments.

The project which will be the largest single NHS hospital build project ever undertaken in Scotland, will cost in excess of £840million in total. The additional costs will include investments in internal roadways, patient transport terminuses and state-of-the-art advanced equipment.
And if anyone from either side of state politics is reading, please make special note of:
“A key consideration for us has always been ensuring economic benefit to the local community. Brookfield has agreed to our requirement that they will offer jobs and training to locally recruited apprentices and people who are currently unemployed which will be of huge economic benefit.

“They have also agreed that wherever possible, sub-contracting opportunities will be advertised to local small to medium businesses.”

BTW, the render I posted is actually an old one, the current design is a bit more curvilinear

Yes, sexy alright, but goes to show they could rebuild it where it is and it'd still look like that.

The structure of the hospital is really great. I hope that the medical facilities and services would make better changes in the medical field in the community. I heard the hospital is expected to finish on 2015, we still have to wait 5 years to see the actual structure. Angioplasty
