Adelaide's best pub?
Re: Adelaide's best pub?
This will be a hard and difficult debate.
Adelaide is the city with the most pubs per capita of any capital city in Australia. In fact instead of the dated moniker 'city of churches', we should instead be called 'the city of pubs'.
As for a favourite one, I can't say. It is like asking a parent to chose which child he loves most.

The Wheatsheaf has the best beer in Adelaide (and two damn fine beer gardens). I'm also partial to The Exeter.

The Exeter is Adelaide's premier slum pub. It's my favourite pub. Most slum pubs don't make me feel welcome, but the Exeter has the best combination of grime, decay and hospitality which all come together in a perfect storm.Nathan wrote:...I'm also partial to The Exeter.
Curry night (thursdays?) is worth booking a table for. Lovely lovely curries upstairs.
If you're looking at the other end of the spectrum, many here will not be surprised to hear me tout Fumo Blu as Adelaide's premier cocktail bar. There's many other very fine cocktail bars in Adelaide (amazingly I rate the Crown and Sceptre amongst them, best range by far in a pub) but Fumo does it better over all. And they open every night until two or three AM (except Sundays). Most places close before midnight on a weekday.
On a flight back from the US recently, I had a look at Qantas's on board entertainment system's travel guide. Adelaide's entry was a bit lame. It basically said we have churches, an Oval, and Fumo Blu.

The Wheatie is awesome- the beer and scotch selections are brilliant, and Jade has an encyclopedic knowledge of what is available.Nathan wrote:The Wheatsheaf has the best beer in Adelaide (and two damn fine beer gardens). I'm also partial to The Exeter.

I like pretty much everything on their menu (and yes, I have had everything on their cocktail menu). My favourite is a Hendrick's gin with ruby grapefruit and cucumber, however.Million wrote:Fumo Blu's more of a bar, but nonetheless, my favourite bar. I like that me and Mono, share the same taste. Hopefully for a toberolone cocktail, also?

I like the Exeter, Crown & Sceptre, and the Worlds End due to the laid back, more bohemian nature compared to somewhere like the Stag. In North Adelaide I love the Royal Oak, caus of the retro internal fit out. I also like the Kentish Arms caus its so hidden and out of the way
Crown & Anchor is OK but some of the people frighten me Austral is nice to sit out on Rundle St I spose

Everyone's heard the "most pubs" and "most restaurants" per capita line in a pub somewhere. But I've never seen anyone offer any proof. I wonder if it's one of those pub facts that's without basis.

What like one of those false-advertisement campaigns just so a city can get 15 seconds in a spotlight?AtD wrote:Everyone's heard the "most pubs" and "most restaurants" per capita line in a pub somewhere. Eg. Perth stating it being the City Of Lights even though thats Paris and Brisbane stating it being the Largest City In The World even though thats Mexico City

Re: Adelaide's best pub?
Our own state govt touts the 'most restaurants per capita' factoid here
Adelaide is home to more restaurants per capita than any other city in Australia and presents a relaxed and high-quality food and wine experience where fine dining, café culture and great pubs and bars mingle together
