Earthquake in Adelaide

#1 Post by Pikey » Sat Apr 17, 2010 12:17 am

So, who had the earth move for them??

Talk about a weird experience!! I thought the air conditioning had turned on due to the windows rattling, but when they started distorting then plates and glasses started, I knew something wasn't right.

Who says nothing happens in Adelaide!!

Adelaide gets hit by medium sized quakes usually at least once a century. This one is pretty much insignificant compared to the 1954 quake that hit Adelaide (which was over 100 times more powerful than the one that hit a few hours ago) and nothing on the quakes that hit Haiti, Chile and China in the past few months.

As someone who is passionate about making buildings and structures safer for disasters such as earthquakes, I don't really see why so many individuals find it amusing (just look on Facebook, Twitter, etc.!). If you were a victim of any of the Haiti, Chile or China earthquakes or knew one you certainly wouldn't.

When I felt it last night, my mind immediately jumped to the horrific quakes overseas recently. You never know for those first couple of seconds how bad it is going to get and so it's quite freaky at first. Luckily a few shakes was all we got.

dang! i live in a bungalow (1910-ish) and the front pillar has moved sideways about 10mm, leaving a 2metre long crack from ground to verandah roof :-(
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
