Why not a Vegas style river fountain show?

I was thinking... why can't we have a Vegas style river fountain show every night in front of the casino at Torrens? Would definitely draw people there.

I think I posted once about a proper fountain display with actual lighting that looks good and not some backyard job looking thing we've got now.

With the new footbridge, I think it would be a good opportunity to use that as a platform for a water/light show, maybe even have some music. Imagine water being 'squirted' from the edges of the footbridge along it's length across the Torrens being lit up as well.

Absolutely agree! I have long advocated for this!

Let's face it, the Torrens is not a particularly spectacular body of water, and at nighttime appears less attractive than it does during the day. At least it looks pretty during the daytime. So we need some kind of other attraction to bring down to the water at night and give people something to look at ... and a Vegas style fountain show is perfect!

I approve of this idea.

Something which as far as I know would be unique in Australia, and which wouldn't break the bank to implement.

This idea was proposed a few years back, as part of S-As submission to the ACC i believe?

A series of 'mist jets' are my preference. Light shows and 'moving images' (such as this example of blinking eye) can be projected onto the mist. Simple and ever changing. Make it so the general public can submit shows, similar to how the Rundle Lantern operates.

There was something similar in place for Blinc, projecting into the waterfall at the end of the new bridge. I would hesitate to make it open to the public though, as I don't believe that will result in the best work shown (especially over the long term). I'd prefer the Festival Centre, Art Gallery of SA and Arts SA to take control and commission works on a rotating basis.

Yeah the Blinc water feature was very ho-hum in my opinion.

The mist jets and 'eye' image I have in mind are massive by comparison. Think 10-20 times larger.

The images projected onto the waterfall at the end of the footbridge for Blinc/Adelaide Festival was pretty ordinary in appearance(not having a dig at the art projected).

They also projected some numbers to do with the ANZACS onto the water fountain but that was ruined on some nights by the wind I think.

Would this come to reality? This is a perfect draw card that we could easily do to attract people to the precinct, without spending huge amount of money. Brisbane has the pools for families to enjoy, Melbourne has the fire show every hour/ half an hour in front of Crowns, what do we have? Nth......

I mean, it would be definitely draw people there if we have like a water show thing, something like the Promenade bay in Singapore, but make it a lot larger, like super water fountain show with mist and music. Make it run every 60 minutes. This will later increase investment activities along the river bank, making more shops and cafes to open. Next is to draw tram line down to King William St, all the way to O'Connel st, so that people can easily travel there. Aww.....is this just a dream or will it eventually happen? Sad....Adelaide.

This topic reminds me of a small show town I've seen in America - Branson, Missouri. Hilton built a pedestrian mall (Branson Landing) up against their river front, and the centrepiece of the Branson Landing is their fountain.

Every hour they play a song, andthe fountain turns into a fire and water show that's synchronised to the music. At the end of each day, they sign off with the national anthem.

Something similar could be incorporated into the convention centre or casino redevelopment.

Really don't need more national anthem than really needed.

But i like the rest.

Great idea I say!! This would certainly set Adelaide apart and would look spectacular as you fly in above. Image

I hate to be that guy (who am I kidding? I am that guy) but...

The Torrens Lake is a living body of water. Sometimes it's a bit more living that is good for itself.

You can't have a water show on living water, the biological particulates clog the pumping gear.

:(

Also, any addition of obstacles would significantly disrupt the various rowing clubs which use the Torrens.

But - I do like the idea of some sort of nightly 'show' on the Riverbank area.

So I am a little perplexed by this? There is an existing fountain in the middle of the river now? It squirts water some 20 odd meters into the air using pumps? Just make the current fountain configuration a little more interesting...add some lights? Surely there is a solution. :?:
