THE tallest building in Adelaide’s south will rise seven storeys over Christies Beach after Onkaparinga Council approved a Price St apartment tower last week.
The building will have offices on the ground floor, 32 apartments and undercover parking.
The council’s development panel last week approved the application, which was lodged by Sam Mercorella Pty Ltd in March.
The panel’s presiding member, Bill Chandler, described the venture as a “pretty brave move”.
It will replace Noarlunga House, which stands at six storeys, as the tallest building in the region.
Development spokeswoman Sonia Mercorella said work on the building, which would be called Crest, would start once a few apartments had been sold.
“Now that we have planning approval, we can start a marketing campaign for sales,” Ms Mercorella said.
“It’s kind of pioneering but it’s (allowed) in the new development plan guidelines.”
She told the Southern Times Messenger in March that the rezoning of Christies Beach to allow high-density living for buildings more than four-storeys high prompted the application.
Last week she said the community had embraced the 1-2 Price St development.
“We’ve had positive responses,” Ms Mercorella said.
“It’s a nice area and has such a pretty beach, and Port Noarlunga is a really pretty township so it’s a great area to invest in.”
She said the first floor had been approved for offices but there was opportunity to expand to cafes and other shops.
She said a budget had been drawn up but she could not confirm building costs until after some of the apartments were sold.
Christies Beach Business and Tourism Association chair Gail Pounsett said the development marked a turning point for the area.
“I think it’s an awesome idea because what we’re trying to do is develop this area all the time,” Mrs Pounsett said.
“It’s going to bring more people into the area and more businesses as well, and then that will, in turn, turn into tourism.
“We’re on the brink of some really good things happening.”
Onkaparinga finance and commercial director Paul Harwood said the council believed multistorey buildings were most suitable near major centres and public transport.
“We know that higher-density development in our centres can also activate main street businesses by bringing more people to these areas, and reduce the pressure on housing in established suburbs,” Mr Harwood said.

I note the development is just over the fence from the local Coles supermarket. Image below taken from Google map view - red diamond indicates approximate location of proposed building.

If you bought an apartment there you would be angry if the school sold off their oval blocking your view
