Yeh yeh, so liveable with high unemployment/few job prospects, huge rise in cost of living and more pain to come on that front.

Also from the article..
“What’s important to remember is that the Economist Intelligence Unit’s index is a composite rating made up 30 indicators, with only four of them being quantitative,” said Dr Lucy Gunn, a research fellow in the Centre for Urban Research at Melbourne’s RMIT university.

“The rest of them are based on a rating from the [Economist Intelligence Unit] itself so there’s almost no objectivity in the development of this index, and it’s really just a marketing tool to help executives understand, in a broad sense, a city’s living conditions.”
In other words, these lists mean jack shit.

It's all relative isn't it? You can live well in most places as long as you have a job, a roof over your head (you own or can afford) and are not starving. The rest are bonuses of 21st century living.

That's exactly the original purpose of the Economist list; it's used by employers to determine the level of 'hardship pay' for expats working in these cities.

When you consider the cost of property in a city like Sydney or Melbourne, someone with an unskilled job earning 40k per year has no chance of getting into a good financial position.

Why? What does where any of us have lived got to do with my comment?

Did you even read the quote from the article?
(Not a dig at the OP)..People online post these lists as some sort of form of pride or one up manship on "rival" cities. The lists arent compiled for that purpose and dont have that type of meaning.
The quote I copied from the article pretty much tells you that.

Weve been ranking considerably well for many years now on these lists. What benefit have we seen?

If anyone is interested here's a link to download the Economist Intelligence "The Global Liveability Index 2022 - Recovery and hardship" publication. It's in PDF format and is 7mb in size.

Adelaide is ranked 30th slipping by 27 places.

What needs to be kept in mind about these indexes is that they are written from the point of view of executive recruiters. Mercers, for example, is an HR consultancy.

So, of course, if you are an executive whose company will pay for a harbour side mansion in Sydney, and pay for your kids to go to Kings School, or Shore, Sydney is great. Otoh, for most people in Sydney, it's an over priced dog box in suburbia, and Sydney, for them, is objectively worse than Adelaide. In fact, most Adelaideans are not only better off, but can probably fly to Sydney for shows etc any time they want and be there quicker than it takes from some of Sydney's outer suburbs.

These lists are subjective.

You'll find as many people from say Sydney or Melbourne, who think Adelaide is amazing, as you will who find Adelaide boring and offering very little.

With everything considered, we've handled the pandemic pretty well here in SA, and while cost of housing has gone up and continues to, it's still relatively affordable compared to Melbourne or Sydney. But we've fallen 27 places.
Melbourne which had the most/longest lockdowns of any city on earth, is in 10th place. That's liveable according to the people who complied this list.

Perth, which kept covid at bay for a long period of time and life continued relatively unchanged while the rest of us went through lockdowns and so on, slipped 26 places as well.

I bet we could all make our own lists and have a different ranks.
