ADELAIDE City Council will tonight vote on a "Times Square style" revamp proposed for the corner of Pulteney and Rundle streets in the city's East End.
The project, running under the working title of "Rundle Convergence" was launched late last year with an allocated budget of $1.6 million. At that time, nine concepts by South Australian and interstate designers were being considered.
At tonight's meeting of the council's Capital Works, Assets and Projects Committee, just two of these designs will be considered for implementation.
"The Rundle Lantern" by Fusion and "The Cube" by Hassell Consultants are the two designs that will be voted on, with each possessing different capabilities and limitations.

There was a thing about this on 7news, though i missed it
But in the adds, it showed the other design and It looked pretty awesome.
So I hope 'The Rundle Lantern" wins it, as it will cover up that ugly Hungry Jacks Carpark and make that drab intersection 'vibrant'.
But the cube design is pretty good.

ADELAIDE City Council has opted for a scaled-down version of an expansive video display to adorn the city's East End.
Plans for a giant television screen elsewhere in the city, however, are not yet dead and buried.
Originally touted as a "Times Square style" makeover for the Pulteney and Rundle St intersections, the project boundaries were last night shifted with the approved design - a 924 panel screen titled the "Rundle Lantern" - acknowledged as being unable to screen video footage.
But a second option - which features higher resolution screens capable of displaying video footage - which was also considered at the council's Capital Works, Assets and Projects Committee meeting last night, has not been ruled out for placement elsewhere in the city beyond this financial year.
But for now, a built-in LED lighting display wrapping around the northern and western facades of U-Park on the corner of Pulteney and Rundle Streets is the next major project in the pipeline, producing an estimated cost of $1.7 million.

The application is now on the development register and has a render on the last page. Looks great and will bulk up that part of town nicely.

I'm worried if this will actually be an improvement or not.... What not spend a few extra hundred thousand and have the video screen which could show things such as afl games of crows and power and other things rather than a still picture.... Basically a $1.7M giant billboard.

If the render in the paper is how it's going to look when it's finished, I think it will look great.
I'm talking about the smaller one with the red, yellow and blue lights.
Would look brilliant.
As Anne Moran said (god, I can't believe I'm agreeing with her) - where would you watch?
There's not a lot of space apart from the end of the mall.
It's an intersection after all.
Where would be a better spot to put a wall of screens?

It could still be video screens even if you dont sit down and watch it...It just ads the element of animation to the 'billboard' which will be placed there now.Matt wrote:If the render in the paper is how it's going to look when it's finished, I think it will look great.

Do you think people sit down and watch video screens in times square?

I think the carpark above Hungry Jacks is a good, rational, utilitarian building. Having said that, I think either proposal would be fantastic. The execution of the floating box would obviously require some real finesse for it to be truly successful.
