i think they're trying to suggest that Adelaide will become a rave party because height limits were raised a few floors in some areas

on another note ,was just browsing through atkins architects website ,this is the company thats designing our new footbridge,and it really puts our buildings designs in to context as to how poorly an unimaginative our buildings and designs are comapred to these buildings they have designed around the world.these are truely iconic buildings.

I absolutely love Atkins, their designs are always so iconic and recognisable, I would really love to work for them in the future. The State Government should surely consider launching a competition with some of the best architects/ firms in the world (i.e. Atkins, Zaha Hadid, Foster + Partners etc.) to design a new landmark for the city! Or maybe they should just put out a competition to the people to send in ideas for what they'd want, and then hold a major competition around the guidelines they'd formed, that way we could all express our ideas

A point of clarification AdelaideAlive, unfortunately Atkins ARE NOT designing the footbridge, they are conducting pedestrian modelling analysis which will provide info on the optimal alignment and width of the footbridge. Then design and construction consortia will bid for the footbridge work.

Shame, Atkins could surely come up with a brilliant iconic design.

Stamp duty abolished for city apartments bought off the plan

FIRST homebuyers could save more than $31,000 under a move by the State Government to abolish stamp duty on city apartments bought off the plan.

Other purchasers will save more than $21,000 under the move which will be part of Thursday's state Budget.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the cut to stamp duty would help create a more vibrant city for people to live and work and encourage higher density inner-city living.

The move was a key element of the Property Council's pre-Budget submissions.

Property Council of Australia SA executive director Nathan Paine said the Government should temporarily eliminate stamp duty for off-the-plan apartments priced under $500,000 and pointed to the first home owner grant as precedent.

"This is a model that has been used in Sydney and Melbourne, so it's not new," he said earlier this month.

"It starts to equalize some of the cost disincentives between apartments and house and land packages.

"It would also stimulate additional construction activity at a time when the industry, which is the largest employer in South Australia, is suffering from a lack of small to medium projects."

Treasurer Jack Snelling said the measure would cost the Government $5.1 million between now and 2015-16 with a full stamp duty concession for two years followed by a partial stamp duty concessions for the two years after that.

The Government has also announced that it will scrap plans to phase out the First Home Bonus Grant, which means first homebuyers who build or purchase a newly constructed home will be eligible for $8000 of state government assistance for at least another 12 months.

So glad the state government has seen the common sense of this stamp duty initiative. Minimal cost over 4 years to deliver potentially a huge dividend to the CBD in terms of increased population and vitality.

I would have preferred that the stamp duty concessions apply to any new apartments which have yet to be sold (to clear current apartment stock), but it's better than nothing.

Well done to the government which seems to actually give a damn about about revitalising the CBD.

Next step in CBD revitalisation .... implement legislation to allow small bar licences in the city (like Melbourne, Perth etc), and removal of outdoor dining licence fees.

edit- just having a look around, $500k gets you a 1 bed 1 bath 50-55m2 apartment.

I wonder it this will improve the offerings in that $500k will get you 2 beds on a large size? otherwise why wouldn't they increase it to $750?
