No, the "scaled down" article in The Advertiser was talking about it isn't going to be video superscreens anymore.

This concept is LCD lights reflecting off of aluminium panels.

From what they've sent me, it looks like they're going with this.

"Recommendation:
That:-

(1) Council endorses Option A of the Urban Design Proposal 1: "The Rundle Lantern" detailed in Attachment A to the item No. 5.6 on the Agenda for the meeting of the Capital Works Assets & Projects Committee held on 16 April 2007, for further development, analysis and capital and operating costing. A further report will be presented to Council outlining the results of this work.

(2) Council notes the $1.7m indicative capital cost of Option A of the Urban Design Proposal 1: "The Rundle Lantern" detailed in Attachment A to item No . 5.6 on the Agenda for the meeting of the Capital Works Assets & Projects Committee held on 16 April 2007."

(Attachment A is basically the booklet they've sent me with the renders and details from Fusion)

I thought the screens were going to be turned on during the day.

To be honest I prefer this than having tv screens.

WOW That's incredibly awesome! It reminds me of Blinkenlights -> http://blinkenlights.de/ (Check out the videos of "Arcade")

When my mates and I first saw that a few years ago we thought it would be awesome to do it on the Santos tower with colour LED's (using PWM to mix colours) if we could get an arts grant for the fringe or something... certainly better than the christmas tree they usually stick up, but the building doesn't have enough windows to use. :(

I'll really be looking forward to seeing this when it's up and running and hopefully it will be possible for the public to submit things to run on it.

The possibility of having the general public submit images/animations is in the brief as a suggestion, yeah.

I think the plan is for it to be interactive.

That does look awesome. My understanding is construction is meant to have eithier started or finished by the end of the financial year (most likely start) so within the next few weeks I'm guessing.

More like a cheese grater with the tilted aluminium methinks.
Hopefully it will look "artistic" - rather than a massive cheese grater... lol.

Who knows.

I like the concept - when I heard "no screens" I was disappointed, but this looks like a great idea if it ends up as good as the renders. It would suit the Rundle precinct well... very funky, vibrant, arty.

I will be pretty annoyed if the superscreen idea dies though.
It needs to happen somewhere. Is there a building facade somewhere else in the city near one of the squares that could be used, so the public can gather and watch major events?

One other thing - it looks like they're going with the option in the photo with the 'pink' animation sizewise.

As in - it's only going to cover 60% of the carpark as opposed to 100% in the other renders.

Aw thats a shame, It wont look as good if they do that.

I hope they cover all of it over, and use different colours during the day or its going to look awful.

so can anyone tell me:

1. Will images (lights arranged to form images) be multicolour, or will they be just 1 colour?

2. are both car parks covered (ie Hungry Jacks and Target) if both, then is 1.7 million dollars going to cover them both?

3. Super screens...well i guess the best place to place a cube with superscreens on them would be spack bang in the middle of rundle mall (gawler place intersection) it could be suspended using the buildings around it and that glass roofed thingo removed....

That intersections pretty small. I wouldnt want a video screen there.
Mabye a suspended cable box above the centre of Victoria square? Now that would be awesome.

Was thinking along the same lines that would really be something.
