I heard that on the radio earlier today.. That seems very excessive. They've very recently re-sleepered and improved this line, so I would imagine the only thing to do is electrification.
There is still a section of the Noarlunga Line to be Upgraded. The section between Brighton & Hove stations and Oaklands to the Sturt River Bridge was Stage one. Completed when the new Oaklands station was opened and the old Station demolished one weekend.
The section between Oaklands to Hove, and Brighton to Noarlunga Centre was Stage 2 completed last Year.
Stage 3 is the Section between the Sturt River Bridge and Adelaide Yard. This is why the 9 months is needed.
Someone with some foresight has actually planned the Goodwood underpass to be built at the same time, plus electrification of the Noarlunga line (Some weekend closures required between Noarlunga and Oaklands) thus minimizing the time required for network shutdowns.

Understandably, there is a lot of commuter frustration with regards to the shutdown of the Noarlunga line once again, but as 85trainfan pointed out, the Government have actually got it right and are undergoing all the project works at once. This should be applauded, rather than criticised. I encourage fellow forumers to correct those who have a whine about it and present the facts, rather than allow the relentless and misguided negativity to continue.

So all up next year is going to be the biggest year for heavy rail in decades. Lots of construction and major temporary closures.

And finally we will see those wires put up.
  • Adelaide Station to close for 5 weeks
  • Minor Refurb for Adelaide Station & Station Arcade
  • Reconstruction of the city railyard
  • Commencement of the $110m Goodwood Junction Underpass
  • Final Noarlunga and Tonsley Line upgrades and electrification
  • Completion of the Seaford Line extension and electrification
  • New electric A-city trains arrive (?)
  • More station upgrades, including Keswick Station

Short-term pain for long-term gain!

They seem to have sort of started work for electrical wiring approaching the Morphett St bridge, eastbound into Adelaide Railway Station; lots of those large, half-buried metal cylinders adjacent to the northernmost track.

I think you may be referring to the air con cooling towers related to the existing convention centre, relocated on account of new convention centre construction

No he isn't there are big holes as he described that have circular rebar within them, and some even have the concrete already pored into them.

Exactly, I was suporting the comment that the holes were NOT Air Conditioning towers.

And incidently Tonsley213, I've been a lot closer to that A/C system than you get to on ANY train!

I think it's safer to say that those holes or whatever they are have something to do with the Convention Centre. But otherwise than this speculation, I'm pretty clueless. Anyone else have any idea?

I don't think so, these holes are all on the western side of the road bridge.

Yeah I'm convinced. Definitely the first step for overhead. The past few days they've been assembling (or 'sussing out') new track on a whole bunch of concrete sleepers just north of this...
