the renders look awesome, have any dates as to when the constuction of this will begin and end, or is it still waiting for approval

Surely they could combine the two - with the right sort of roof couldn't we still have the little cars full of screaming, even vomiting patrons zooming in and out and around while other things were happening in the new halls below? That excellent sharp turn at the top right could be trasnplanted to a new position right over the entrance of the new pavilion.

We need more imagination around here.

Alternatively, since the government owns all the land at Wayville except for a few hectares owned by the Royal Horticultural and Agricultural Society where thier oval and offices are, our esteemed govt and its highly competent ministers should be looking at a few alternatives.

The land at Wayville is superbly located for housing, and is in my opinion poorly situated for use as a showground. Parking is extremely problematic, the approach from Goodwood Road is very poor if not lethal, there is little room for expansion of present facilities, and the site planning for showground and exhibition purposes is bad.

Why not sell the 120ha or so of govt land involved for housing (walk to CBD, near train and tram etc - say a starting price of $250,000 per allotment) and look again at the lower-priced Actil/Cheltenham racecourse site as a place for the showgrounds.

A combined showground/exhibition/recreation/wetlands site at Cheltenham would make a lot of sense. The existing buildings could become part of the new showgrounds, it's got access to rail and arterial roads, and there is plenty of room for expansion and parking, even across the rail line to the former GMH complex. There would be plenty of money available from the sale of the Wayville home sites.

The Cheltenham thing has been sifted through again and again, but I'm not sure how carefully with regard to the economics and amenity of a showground relocation and subsequent release of the extremely valuable government-owned showground land for housing.

Centennial Hall tumbles down

HEAVY machinery reduced the historic walls of Centennial Hall to rubble yesterday.

Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society chief executive John Rothwell said a "world-class exhibition facility is expected to begin in September" in place of the Wayville Showgrounds building, which once hosted stars from The Beatles to Barry White.

The Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society, in partnership with The Advertiser , has invited the public to submit their memories of Centennial Hall to include in a book commemorating the hall's 71-year history.

Last ride on Mad Mouse

SHOWGOERS this year have one last chance to ride the Mad Mouse before it is replaced with a new rollercoaster next year.

The 44-year-old Mad Mouse is the oldest ride at the Royal Adelaide Show, which starts next Friday, September 7.

While its replacement at Wayville is top secret, ride owner Bob Lawrence told the Eastern Courier last week it would be another ``equally exciting ... loop coaster'', recently been purchased from Italy.

``It cost some millions and is about the same height about 11 metres,'' he said.

``Yes, it goes upside down and will be just as popular.''

Mr Lawrence described the Mad Mouse as an Adelaide Show icon, saying he been receiving calls from people disappointed to hear it was being retired.

``People don't want it to go, it's a wonderful ride and it's been super popular ... it's very, very sad,'' he said.

After this year's show, it will be dismantled and sold; some have been expressing interest in buying one of the distinctive red cars ``as a memento''.

The cars are worth about $2500 each.

The end of the Mad Mouse follows May's annoucement of a $35 million refit of the Showgrounds that will include a new exhibition complex, expected to open in 2008.
