I remember the naysayers decrying the tram extension as a waste, and look how popular that has been and how it has been a catalyst for other developments.
Yes. I like your comment on the bridge being "a pretty transformative piece of kit".
I agreed with your post up till this point.

The tram extension was and is a waste and has only prompted more government development to justify it.

sure it is used alot, but it is also free.

(just to clarify I mean the part down Port Road - happy with the bit to the end of North Terrace)

Free is good! Nice to know I can get a little something back for all the taxes I pay. Besides, I just like free stuff!

I'm with pushbutton! My hard earned went into that, may as well get what I'm paying for.

Does anyone know what the plan is for the area south of the landing (especially for the interim before the casino development happens)? Went for a walk around the area today and realised just how horrible the connection to the railway station is.

To access the station from the bridge you have to go through a very very tired part of the Festival Centre surrounds, cross what seems to be a waiting area for taxi's and other drivers, then the service road (Festival Dr), then past the loading dock for Intercontinental, before you get to the station entrance that's almost hidden with the entrance sign falling away and all the neighbouring windows on the entrance level blacked out. It has to be one of the most un-inviting areas in the city and very pedestrian un-friendly.

Edit: Here's the street view from Festival Dr towards the bridge landing area, and then 180° towards the station entrance.

I totally agree...it seems absurd if this is not addressed or changed drastically before the footbridge opens. If anyone knows of the future plans for this area please let us know as in its current state it truly is a disaster...

Not sure what's going to happen in the near future but this whole area will be redeveloped with the casino extension.

Good video. Glad the water feature down the stairs alongside the Festival Centre is still there. Awfully convenient camera pan when exiting the station though, so that the loading dock isn't seen.

I'm sure I read somewhere this will not be 100% completed by the Ashes Test, but it WILL be usable. I guess that means the pretty things won't be ready:( and we'll have to deal with a month of Sadvertiser moaning about how all this money for a half finished bridge etc:( :wallbash: :wallbash:
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.
